AITAH for calling boyfriends Chief operating officer, boyfriends “old boss” instead of COO

I went to a Work holiday party with my boyfriend 39M and me 37F, where his entire company was there. I had drank a little so I was a little tipsy. He introduced me to his former Direct report- and when I met him, I said oh your “boyfriend’s old boss” . I didn’t feel like anything was weird with that, but my boyfriend said the guy was taken a back, because he is the chief operating officer of the company. But I was just trying to draw the connection between my boyfriend and the guy that used to be his direct report, since he has a new boss. Now my boyfriend hates me and he’s afraid he is gonna get fired because of my comment. How do we get past this? My boyfriend is really uncomfortable about the situation right now.

Just for a better understanding of where we were- it was at a casino with an open bar band and Dj

  1. lmao only the weirdest person on Earth would be bothered by this – applying to both your boyfriend and his boss

    This is a huge NTA

  2. NTA. Your BF is majorly overreacting and being weird about this whole thing. I highly doubt his “old boss” gave it a second thought.

  3. Your boyfriend isn’t going to get fired for this. He’s reading too much in to it. But.
For crying out loud, you’re also old enough to stop getting tipsy at the Christmas work event.

    1. Bah, you’re never too old to get shitfaced at the company Christmas Party. That’s what company Christmas Parties are *for*; you know how you hire “white-hat” hackers to test your company’s IT security? The company Christmas Party is the annual HR stress test.

      1. I can see why people think it’s a bad idea but I’ve never been to a Christmas party where every person wasn’t hammered lol

  4. NTA, and I have no earthly idea why the COO took offense unless his ego is as fragile as a certain Marmalade Man.

Your BF is definitely overreacting. Tell him to put on his big boy pants and go to work.

Some people and their stupid insufferable corporate bullshit… These people need to get over themselves. Oh boo hoo, somebody didn’t use the right words for a pwecious wittle title.

  6. Unless the employer is completely unhinged, no one is going to get fired simply because their partner used mildly awkward phrasing one time. If your boyfriend does get the ax, it wasn’t because of this incident.

    NTA

  7. NTA either the COO has a power complex or boyfriend is being ridiculously silly. He must be quite senior to have been managed by the COO? Feels like he needs to grow up honestly.

  8. NTA
Not sure though who is more insecure – your BF or his “former boss”…

The most respected leaders I’ve ever met didn’t care much about titles or how they were addressed.
