I, 28m have a chunk of land (30acres) that is currently fenced in amongst a continuous 200 acre lot with my “families” cattle on it, I use that term loosely as I’ve never been close to that side of my family, they have been doing some thing on my property that I’m not okay with like moving and taking down my hunting stands, throwing bars of soap everywhere because they’re mad that I hunt on it as they feel like they’re entitled to it, in a trail camera video my uncle urinated in a corn pile, and screamed at the camera that I needed to leave, making it seem as though he feels entitled to my property more than I am, I’ve already scheduled a survey for later this month and plan on building the fence this spring, I’m just wondering if me going through with this will make me the AH or am I in my own rights within property ownership to make this move thank you.
NTA. If it’s your land, in your name then you can do what you like. And I would certainly want some sort of barrier up between me and malicious folks even if they’re related to me.
That’s my thoughts as well it will definitely put a damper on their cattle operation but that’s also not really my problem I feel
Ummm… no. What an odd family.
NTA,
At this point though I would just sell the land and buy property elsewhere. Getting a fence built is not going to solve anything. You’ll have to put cameras up Basically everywhere because they will most likely damage your fence. Then you’ll have to take him to court and it will just get messy.
I had some land connected to family that I sold. It was just easier not to deal with them.
Ngl I have considered, there is a slum lord that throws up trailer parks on every piece of land he gets I’ve considered contacting just to be petty
I think this would be appropriate for your family.
Don’t ever set foot outside there without wearing Blaze Orange.
They might stage a hunting accident.
NTA. This is your property and you are doing the basic minimum to protect it. They are being utterly ridiculous!
Get the fence. And then there will be no excuse for them when they trespass. Familiarize yourself with your local trespassing laws, post any necessary signs, and if they do trespass after this call the police. Being “family” does not excuse someone for such disrespect and behavior, in fact it requires it.
Plus they are running their cattle for free on your land
It is a really smart move to get the survey done as that will leave no question as to the borders of your property. Whatever the results I suggest you mail them to each family member whose property is adjacent to yours.
NTA.
NTA if it’s legal for you to do so.
Land rights can get complicated, especially when the land belongs or previously belonged to family because the inheritance isn’t always straightforward. Also some places have very specific and sometimes archaic laws in regard to fencing and cattle, so you should probably get an opinion from someone with expertise in land rights in your area.
NTA but don’t expect your unreasonable family to understand that. Get the survey and don’t engage in retaliation. Build your fence as is your right.
NTA. Even if your family weren’t unhinged, you’d still be fine for fencing in your land.
But, considering they ARE unhinged: you might wanna sell it and get some other land they don’t feel entitled to. Just to get rid of the headache.
NTA.
Honestly, I would be pressing charges for trespassing, damage to the property and anything else that you could add to the list. Then fence the property and be done with that crew.
