AITAH for pranking my friend into going to public school?

I was 14 at the time, and one of my friends planned to be homeschooled. We wanted to attend public school with us. When some of our friends from the group found out, they told me to tell him that the girl he was into at the time wanted him to go to public school. That was a lie( I didn’t know myself ). So came the day I told him, and he seemed really excited about it. On the first day of freshman year, we saw him, and Everyone in the friend group who was in the know started laughing. I was confused, so then I was pulled to the side and was finally informed about the whole "prank". To be honest, I did end up laughing a little.

I told this story to some new friends of mine, and they think that I wasn’t an asshole solely because I wasn’t in on the joke to begin with. Although some think I am for not questioning it in the first place.

So am I an asshole for that?

  1. NTA because you didnʻt know. Apologize to your friend and tell him that.

Be cautious of these “friends” pulling the “prank” (which was not funny). They feel pleased with themselves for pulling a nasty trick on this friend, so theyʻre likely to escalate to worse “pranks” – which may be increasingly harmful. You may be the victim next time.

It sounds like these other new friends are better people. Maybe you and this other guy can spend more time with them and less with your old “friends” (who are not acting like actual friends).

  2. 14 at the time? Was this years ago or something? Does it even matter now? You’re kinda messed up for laughing but you shouldnt decide to go to public school for something like that anyways

  3. NTA, at least not intentionally. You told him what your friends told you and didn’t even know it was a prank at the time. It sounds like you were basically used as the messenger.

Could you have questioned it more? Maybe. But you were also 14, and stuff like that happens in friend groups all the time at that age. The people who actually planned the prank are way more responsible for it than you are.
