So I know that men might not appreciate this but ladies I’m sure you all know what it’s like when you set up to do band assisted pull ups. First of all you can’t reach the bar so you gotta drag a box or something to stand on, set up you bands blah blah blah.
I did this yesterday and was finally able to start, literally about to go…..aaaand a big dude comes and stands across from me like centimetres from me and starts doing pull ups right in front of me! Like I’m talking crotch in face! The pull up bars at my gym are very close together if two people are doing pull ups across from each other but side by side is absolutely fine.
So my question…..is it really possible that this man could be in his own world and just not have noticed putting his crotch inches from my face or is this something men do? And if so is it a sort of mating ritual? A peacocking show off thing? Or an intimidation ‘this is my gym, and I’ll work out where I want even if it’s in your space’. I mean I just can’t imagine if I was a man that he would be cool with doing that….but maybe I’m wrong.
So just for clarity, I’m standing on a box with my hands on the bar about to drip down to do a pull up. Man comes up just as I’m about to go and grabs the bar in front of me and starts doing vigorous pull ups right in front of me. And because I’m standing on the box his crotch is literally in my face.
I’m sure he knew what he was doing.
He’s probably too jacked full of juice to notice or have any sort of inhibition. And yes, some people just have zero manners. I’ve seen them all in gym over 2 decades.

It’s a rude thing to do. You should have anticipated that he needed to do chin-ups.
JK some people at the gym don’t have any etiquette, it happens.
That’s just weird some people have no common courtesy and others are oblivious and then there are assholes.
Imo most men serious about working out ignore women at the gym. Probably in his own world and didn’t care, esp if he had a set to get through.
It’s hard to say without seeing the setup. If it was his only option and it’s the last part of his workout then it may have just been the option available to him. Maybe he was in his own world. Maybe he’s a douche. Maybe it’s Maybelline.
Could be either. Chances are he just wanted to rep out some pull-ups between sets of whatever he was doing. This is common way to get pull ups in for me. Down with a push set, go rep 10 pull-ups. You can get a lot of pulls into a short gym session this way.
Without much else context, I’d say it was more about taking up the space that any person was about to use rather than any attempt to show off to you in particular. Seems a bit more “This entire gym is mine” rather than “Any girl is mine.” Any grunts he may have made or where his eyes were looking may change that.
In short, dick move against anyone, not specifically against a girl.
It’s a gym. People do pull ups. He’s not thinking about you.
Why would the gym bother with two bars if its impossible to use them ag the same time?
He definitely knew what he was doing based on how you describe it. Next time you should move out of the way really quickly and make sure to react with body language and facial expressions that makes it look like he’s super messed up. Stare him down with a look of disgust. That’s the only way you can really get back at someone that obviously does not care about gym etiquette. If they don’t care at least you’ve communicated your discomfort.
Also in this situation I would move in a really aggressive way to another spot. If he follows you I would either build up the courage to tell him off or talk to a gym rep.
Sounds like a gym bro asshole. I go to the gym regularly and would NEVER do this to anyone, especially a woman. He likely thought doing that would make you hot for him, so yes he was living in his own world.
