WIBTA if I called animal control on my neighbors?

Hey there. My neighbors across the street have their husky mix tied up just outside one of their garages. He’s been out there barking for over 9 hours and I don’t think anyone’s home. Normally there’s like 4 people home at a time since it’s a multi family property, but I haven’t seen anyone all day. I work from home so I’ve been periodically checking. I can’t tell if he has food and water, so he might or might not. The temperature is 60 degrees so comfortable. But for 9 hours? My husband said to just leave the situation alone, but we would never leave our dogs tied up outside while we were away all day. Also, we’ve never met these neighbors so I don’t know what kind of people they are, except they have raging parties until like 3 am every weekend in the summer. WIBTA if I called animal control or is there a better solution?

  1. INFO: You said you can’t tell if it has access to food or water? What about a shelter? (Sun or rain counts.)

It might be worth a call to say this animal has been outside for 8+hrs, has been barking nonstop, and you can’t visibly see food or water. They might do a wellness check, they might not.

For the parties, there are noise ordinances for a reason. Call the cops if it is that loud.

    1. The garage door is open so he does have access to shelter, but I cannot tell if he has food or water inside. Yeah the parties are insane. I can literally hear all the words to the music from my bedroom and our properties are fairly far apart.

  2. In most situations like this, the best thing to do first would be to talk to the neighbours. The content and outcome of that discussion should then be a guide for your next move.

YWBTA escalate without discussion first and it’s a good reason to meet the neighbours

    1. Yeah I guess it didn’t even occur to me to talk to them. I’m pretty introverted when it comes to just meeting new people, but they may be reasonable. Still no one has been home all day, though.

  3. Before doing anything I would go for a walk and see if the animal has food or water. In my opinion huskies are 100% fine to be outside in that kind of weather. If however the animal has no water I would call.

    1. Good idea. The garage is kind of close to the road but angled away, so I can try to sneak a peak without being a creep. His line he’s connected to isn’t very long so I could probably at least see what he has beer him. I don’t want to overreact. I just feel bad for the pup.

  4. INfo: do they normally take good care of this dog? Does the dog normally look well-fed and groomed? Can you see shelter for the dog? What is the temperature, is it very cold or hot?

Without the above info: it’s been less than 12 hours, that’s not enough to call animal control. Huskies also are VERY vocal, the dog may just be barking because it wants attention, has separation anxiety/isn’t used to being alone (as you said, there’s normally people there), etc. But if the barking is that incessant and you worry, call the non-mergency police number. Tell them you can’t see food or water and the barking is a nuisance. They will check it out and can decide if the conditions of the dog warrant a call to animal rescue.

  5. YWBTA. Go check if your neighbours are okay first! You haven’t seen anyone all day and the dog’s been barking constantly. Unless this is a regular occurrence you might wanna show some care and make sure they’re alive.

“Hey I was just checking you were okay cause your dog was barking and I ain’t seen you all day. My name’s x btw, I live over there. Cool, nice to meet you”

    1. Oh geez I didn’t even think of that, since there are so many people living on the property. It is an odd occurrence to not see or hear anyone over there all day.

      1. Yeah so literally just go over there and check, knock on the door, holler. If there’s no answer then maybe call the police for a wellness check. Imagine you were laying face down or something and someone calls animal control instead of checking on you. I don’t think you have any reason to think that these neighbours would have any extreme reaction to you checking if they’re alright.

  6. Call now. And keep calling until the situation resolves. This is not how dogs are cared for. NTA

  7. Remember…any time you call Animal Control…the odds of you sentencing that animal to death (even if they didn’t do anything to warrant it like attack someone or are suffering and euthanasia will be a mercy for them) is really high up there. If you are truly concerned about an animals well being and overall long term care then calling animal control should be the last thing on your list. Ask yourself this…does the dog have a high abundance of food, water, and well insulated shelter? Is the chain the dog is attached to long enough to let it roam in a pretty big circle on the property? It is the kind of dog that can thrive outside in the elements? Or are you calling just because you’re annoyed by the barking and once that dog is removed and if the owners can’t cover the cost to get it out of the humane society’s custody, that dog will then have 3 days to get adopted by another family before it is put down even if it is perfectly healthy, young, well trained, up to date on all of it’s shots and vet visits, and even pure bred. Know that older (as in non-puppy), big, high maintenance dogs rarely get adopted out so consider carefully before you call animal control. Are you really concerned and they are the only option or are you just annoyed. Animals have been killed for far less reasons which is heartbreaking since there’s no way to tell them why these bad things are happening to them.

Yes you WBTAH if you called just because you were annoyed and not because you were actually concerned about the animal and they were the dogs only hope.
