AITA My friend Has someone elses iphone

My friend called me today and said he has someone’s package. It had his address on it, so he signed for it and took it in, not realizing it wasn’t addressed to him until he got inside. He’s kept the package, which he says contains an iPhone 16 with AT&T service once turned on. He was under the influence at first, so he thought it was his lucky day, but now that he’s sober, he’s terrified of possibly going to jail or having the company or the person who bought the package involve law enforcement. He doesn’t know whether to get rid of it or run. I told him that’s what he gets, but now I feel bad. AITA? What should he do? And what do you think will happen?

  1. Take it to an AT&T store and drop it off saying he found this. I hope he wasn’t stupid enough to log into his apple id on the phone.

    1. apparently he made another apple account just to see if it was a scam phone but its real. he set it up and everything. and now that he isnt drunk hes scared some cop is going to come knocking. said theres eservice on it.

      1. Those things have GPS in them. Reset it to factory default and take it to At&T and say you found this phone.

  2. I wouldn’t say YTA, but you’re not guiding your friend towards the right path.

First of all, is running or getting rid of the phone the only two options that’s going through you and your friends’ head? How about maybe returning the phone to the correct address and apologizing to the individual to which the phone belongs to. This goes to show the character of you and your friend and hopefully your friend chooses to do the right thing.

There’s a lot of people on here that’ll say just take it or what not, and tbh, all those people are the AH’s. Please don’t be like them and tell your friend to return it, because I’m sure you’d want someone to do the same for you.

Edit: Just saw your other reply… your friend really f’ed up :/

    1. Right? Why are they asking as if this is a body?

Set it to factory, ask the neighbors is they’re missing a package and have them tell him what it is before giving it back. Or return it to AT&T. Or if he hasn’t get rid of the box it came in, contact whoever and return it there.

If they ask why it’s open, dude was drunk and opened it but soon realized it wasn’t his.

Edit: OP posted a year ago about making a band on r/teenagers, we’re dealing with children and it shows.

  3. NTA, but just return it, obviously you can’t return it via address since the box had your friend’s address. Something similar happened to me and some friends, we searched the name on Facebook, we looked as much as we could, looking to see if we could confirm this was the right person, same name, city, saw our house so we knew we had the right people, we reached out told them we got there package we opened it thinking it was ours because we did have a package coming, blah blah. They didn’t even care we opened it, they were just so thankful we reached out they understood. Difference is we weren’t planning on keeping the stuff once we opened it we knew it wasn’t ours so we reached out that day.

  4. Call the shipper or company, they will find the person it belongs to. Bad karma to keep it. Throwing it away is not good either. Do what’s right.
