AITA for wanting to shower once a day in wintertime??

I’m (16M) about to take a shower and I have practice tomorrow at 5pm. As I take more than 5 minutes to shower I ask my parents if I’ve got time to shower, they says no.

As I walk back to my room, he calls me back to tell me it’s pointless taking a shower tonight because i’ll be showering again tomorrow anyways? I then asked him "Isn’t it normal to shower once a day?" And he picks up the tone and tells me it’s not, just to warn me he wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up again. It’s not the first time we’ve had this debate but it’s the first time he starts yelling about it. At this point I know if I keep pushing it’s going to ruin the evening so I walk to my room and start writing this.

AITA?

  1. Why are your parents regulating when you can shower?
And why would they find it odd for teenagers to shower once a day?
Athletic teen boys are notoriously offensive to the nose otherwise.
I would ask for more details but I don’t think it’s necessary.

    NTA.

Edit: what does “pick up the tone” mean?

    1. Forgot to add no practice today,
But part of the problem is I have super dense and curly hair, and unless I detangle once a day with hot water I get 1-unhygienic 2-horrible hair

      thanks for your opinion though

Edit: Yelling (not screaming, but loud enough talking to make me understand this isnt something I should debate)
      I showered in the end

  2. NTA for *wanting* to shower. I’m not sure where you live, but I *definitely* shower once a day all year round. Sometimes more than once if it’s super hot.

They shouldn’t be yelling at you about it, even if they have a specific reason (like cost). They can calmly state their expectations.

  3. INFO NEEDED: What time is it where you live, and why is practice relevant. Did you have an opportunity to shower before now, or was this the first chance you had all day?

    1. I get home at from school at 5pm on tuesdays.
After homework and a little bit of telaxing (20min) i’m free to shower until I decide to go sleep, around 10:45pm
Practice (track and field) is relevant in my dad’s view because i’m going to shower tomorrow anyways, so I might as well hold back today.
At time of post it was around 8pm

      1. NTA: unless there is some weird noise thing, I can’t think of why you couldn’t shower. Also may be due to shower length, but I’m still NTA if you take 30 minutes or less.

        1. between my reply to you and now, I showered. add 5-10 minutes if i’m washing my hair (twice a week, and i TRY to make that match with practice days)

  4. It seems odd that your parents are regulating your showering but seems only this one instance so far? Are they strapped for money?

But in general: if you don’t work out daily, for your skin it’s healthier not to shower every single day. If you do sweat a lot, by all means go for it. As long as you’re happy and your skin is healthy, do what makes you feel good (and clean haha). Also NTA for wanting to take a shower. Clearly

  5. People decide what is normal for them. At 16, you hormones are CRAZY. Once a day could be the right answer for you. How much longer do you shower than 5 minutes?

Some people don’t shower once a day in the winter because it can make you skin really dry.

  6. Showering daily, when possible, is the norm. Washing your hair daily with shampoo isn’t recommended cause it can damage it, but you should try to shower daily if you can.
