AITA For telling a friend of mine that I heard from another friend about the new job they have?

I decided to reconnect with some old friends. I texted my old friend Anthony and we started going back and forth. He mentioned he got a new job but didn’t say what. I had heard from another friend of mine’s, Yudith, that they were working at Target. They just left their job at a law firm so it was kinda a step down. I told Anthony “oh yeah Yudith mentioned you were working at Target now”. I didn’t think twice about it, it felt weird to just play dumb . Yudith got mad that I told Anthony that she told me. I didn’t think it was a big deal at first, but her reasoning was that it was embarrassing for Anthony since he had left a better gig for a part time job and that I wasn’t supposed to know he was working at Target. So I guess I ratted out that Yudith spread this “secret” and used it just to get more out of a convo selfishly. I didn’t think it was something big enough to be a secret and that want communicated to me either. I feel awful.

  1. Mildly you’re a jerk for your condescending view of ‘step down.’ Maybe he is preserving his mental health. NTA. Apologize for being awkward and wish him well.

    1. I should’ve clarified, I didn’t view it as a step down. I think Anthony may have thought others would view it as a step down which is why he was upset that Yudith told me about it.

    2. Target is definitely NOT the way to go to preserve mental health, they preach it but they don’t gaf -A Target employee (i still get your point though)

      1. Fair. But I never said Target was a sanctuary. Stepping away from the legal field to literally anywhere for any reason could be justified.

    3. Not to mention having no idea what his job may be? Stocker, cashier, management, corporate lawyer.

And if he’s content, and his work harms no one, there’s no such thing as a bad job.

  2. No mate you didn’t rat out yudith. You indirectly told Anthony that he can’t trust yudith for future secrets. NTA

  3. No, you didn’t realize that it was a secret. Now if it was supposed to be a secret, and you knew that it was and you intentionally mentioned it then yes! Now, if he told her in confidence and she blabbered to you, that is not on you, that is 100% on her. She should be upset with herself and not you

  4. NTA

It doesn’t sound like you were considering it a step down. Anthony may see it as a step down, at which point, he won’t care how you word it or what you say. But it doesn’t sound like you were mean or judgmental.

Perhaps if Yudith felt that it was embarrassing for Anthony, she shouldn’t be spreading gossip.
