AITA for reporting Neighbors?

So we have had our neighbors next door about 1-2, sometimes 3, times a week they have pretty loud bass that travels from their house into ours. The houses are about 10ft apart. We have asked at least 3-4 times if they could just turn down the bass as it’s very loud and shakes our walls. We don’t have any issue with the noise volume as we don’t hear that, but the bass is quite bad. Each time we’ve asked they do turn it down, but then a day or two later it’s the same thing. We’ve lived here for about 2 months now and every week it’s something. Even when it’s not "loud loud" it still goes into our bedroom all the way in the back. If we put TV on it covers it if we keep it louder, but it lasts for hours. They have a sound system inside as well at times they just sit in their car in their driveway and do it. We have always waited for it to be over 30 min or so before we ever said anything. We have bought noise machines, box fans, rugs, and heavy curtains to help, but it doesn’t.

Well I found out from the previous owners and other neighbors that this has been a long standing issue. So at this point I want to escalate to non emergency or Code Enforcement as it seems they clearly never get it’s just the bass. Now I’m not trying to also be some jerk, but we would like to enjoy some peace in our home and not have to always be on edge wondering when it happens next. I’ve written down a log about all the events and that we have chatted with them especially since the mom is apart of the pd in some way, not an officer, but I don’t want to keep asking either as it seems pointless. I know they are renting as well and the neighbor suggested Code Enforcement for the owners to get involved as well.

AITA by not wanting to talk to them anymore and escalate this? I know I’m the new neighbor and the past owners and such had this issue, but I just don’t want to be a dick doing this now.

  1. In this situation, there’s nothing else you can do.

Find out exactly what your local noise ordinances cover before making a report.

It will be helpful if multiple neighbors file complaints; you should talk with others about doing so.

    NTA.

ps> You might also get one of those free “decibel meter” apps for your phone/tablet and track just how loud they get and when…

    1. Thank you. They said for Nuisances the following for the City Ordinances: “All unnecessary or unauthorized noises and annoying vibrations, including animal noises.”

So I believe this includes bass from my understanding

  2. NTA, they know exactly what they are doing and are like a toddler who has been told to not touch the stove. Clearly they dont care about being decent neighbors to anyone so why should you feel that way towards them?

  3. NTA – either they are violating ordinances or not. If they are, you’re well within your rights to complain. If they are not, you’ll have to let it go though.

  4. Most places have noise ordinances. If this is a recurring problem, especially in nighttime hours, you would be NTA for reporting it.

    1. Typically it doesn’t go past 9pm and is more day time, but according to the Ordinances it says any Annoying Vibrations are considers a Nusiance.

  5. NTA. If this is happening during evening/night hours, they’re creating a public nuisance. If it’s during the daytime, I’m afraid that there’s nothing you (or code enforcement) can do about it.

  6. You’ve asked multiple times. They continue to ignore the issue. You shouldn’t have to continue asking.

Escalate to the landlord and code enforcement. NTA

  7. Starting in 2020, our neighborhood got really bad with house parties, which we reported multiple times. We did use a Decibel Meter app. We ended up moving in 2021.

Although I was not able to resolve the problem except for by moving, I encourage you to report them.

  8. I would say you’re doing the right thing by reporting them to authorities which have authorities you choose that is. Of course first of all only a noise violation or disturbing the peace which would be considered a civil infraction, but eventually it could be far more for disobeying court and law enforcement orders repeatedly.
