When I was living with my grandpa, we agreed that my rent was $500 a month. We split it as $250 every two weeks just to make payments easier.
One month happened to have three paychecks because of how the calendar fell. I still paid $500 for that month, because the agreement was $500 per month, not “$250 every paycheck no matter what.”
Back then, he tried to say I owed an extra $250 because of that third paycheck. We argued about it, and that situation is actually part of why I moved out. Nothing was ever paid or settled beyond that, and life moved on.
Now, five years later, he called me saying I still owe him that $250.
I told him that the agreement was $500 a month, I paid that, and a month having three paychecks doesn’t change the rent. I also told him I’m not revisiting this again.
NTA. You don’t owe anymore if you paid $500. Gramps is greedy AND bad at math
On the other hand he might just be old and confused. But I doubt it.
NTA
It’s sad it escalated so much when it started off as so unreasonable to begin with. What rent is by paycheck? Of course the deal was by the month.
You don’t *still* owe it because if what you’re saying here is true, you *never* owed it.
Why are you posting this AGAIN?????????? I JUST READ THIS THE OTHER DAY.
NTA. It’s sad that your own grandpa is trying to scam you.
NTA.
500 per month x12 = 6000 for the year.
If he wanted you to pay every two weeks as installments towards that month, that’s what you did.
If he wanted you to pay 500 every two weeks, that’s was not agreed upon.
If he wanted installments, at the rate of 500 per month, then…
6000 / 52 weeks = 115.385
115.40 x2 for a fortnightly payment would be $230.80
He needs to be clearer about what he meant. Old dogs need to learn new communication tricks.
NTA
Your grandpa is a swindler.
NTA
That’s a pretty weird request honestly. Is he in financial need or was he doing you a favor with a cheap rent and is trying to give you some lesson? You don’t owe it but I would try to get to the bottom of it if he is still talking about it.
NTA
In fact, if you were there for a full year and you were paying fortnightly, there would have been another time you shouldn’t have paid.
NTA. $500 a month means $500 a month.
NTA. Your grandpa is either dumb or still trying to pull one over on you. Then again if you want back in his Will?
Rent is month to month. $500 a month is $500 a month because months are set things where as pay cheques aren’t. NTA. Offer to mow his lawns and clean his gutters. My Pop made me the man I am today and I really miss him.
Your grandpa is greedy as fuck. NTA.
I pay my father in law by the week because it’s easier for everyone but we agreed to that. Sometimes he might get 625, oh well. If he wanted 500 a month that’s what he would get, nothing more nothing less.
NTA. That’s not how it works, but if your grandpa is willing to alienate his grandchild over a measly $250, well I don’t know what to tell him.
This is why everything, even between family, need to be spelled out and written down.
