I honestly can’t tell if I’m reading too much into it and he’s trying to be a friend or if he likes me. We text every day, mostly random stuff.
He asked me to have dinner once and we had a good time. He drove an hour to spend the day with me, then through social situations( I’m close with his family) I’ve seen him pretty much every weekend. His dad let it slip they have talked about me a few times, but when I offer to drive down to see him he isn’t into it.
I don’t know if he’s just super shy or had bad experiences but no hug when I leave unless I ask ( he will sometimes ask too), no physical contact at all. A friend suggested making the first move but I honestly can’t tell if he likes me or if be making an ass out of myself.
If you don’t look remotely close to Gorlock the Destroyer then he likes you.

This is kind of my thought. He is autistic, so socially awkward. He is also what people would say is “heavy” and I would guess had bad experiences in the past, I couldn’t care less about that if it’s his hang up. He’s a great person and I genuinely enjoy spending time with him.
I think the next time you hug just give him a quick peck on the lips and turn around and leave. That will put the ball in his court.
Have you tried asking him out?
We live in a post-#metoo world. If he doesn’t express any interest in you physically he is being prudent. Making sure to only touch you after asking if he can or when you ask is how he stays safe.
Definitely sounds like he’s in to you. The thing about not wanting you to drive down to see him is nothing to worry about, probably just shyness about something. I also suggest making the first move. Have fun!
I don’t want these people to mislead you if things end up going different. I’ve been in a situation where I thought all the signs were there and it ended up not being what I thought. Not to say it’s the same as you but the general rule has always been “if you’re confused then he’s not interested.” I would suggest making a move if it really bothers you though otherwise it’s just slow burn and wastes your time thinking about it
