AITA for adjusting my mirrors?

Im writing this post because of an altercation I had with a complete stranger. I have difficulty driving at night because of all the bright headlights. I know some cars come stock with them and you can’t control that, you can however control how closely you follow other people. If someone is tailgating me or stop so closely behind me at a red light it blinds me through my mirrors. Ive started to adjust my mirrors so their headlights will be reflected back at them. Now one day I was on my way home from work being outside all day left me cold, wet and tired. All of a sudden a guy probably early 20s in his lifted truck starts tailgating flashing his brights and light bar trying to get me to move out of his way. I could have, but my turn was coming up so instead I stayed in my lane and adjusted my mirrors, it must have worked, because he backed off. Or so I thought he ended up following me home just to yell at me saying how I could have caused him to crash. I told him and tailgating in the rain doesn’t prevent that either. After about 10 minutes I told him he’d better get going before I call the cops and have their lights blind him for trespassing. He peeled out of my driveway cussing me out some more. So I gotta ask am I the asshole?

  1. If so, I’m also an asshole.. a proud one at that! Stay off my ass, and use proper headlights for your housings.

  2. I hate pricks on the road and chances are 90% of the people are just the same. “Don’t instigate road rage” they cry. How bout you get off my ass?

  3. NTA.

Apparently I’m not the only person who has gotten good at changing mirror adjustment when a jacked up truck with LED lights that weren’t re-aimed is behind me. Good to know.

  4. NTA. The tailgating and flashing lights is pathetic and your response was completely reasonable. It’s not like you brake-checked him or anything. His decision to follow you home and confront you is completely unhinged and shows that he is wildly out of touch with common courtesy.

  5. NTA. I adjust my mirrors if someone is tailgating at night because it’s blinding. I have no idea if it’s reflected back at them, but if it is, they can solve their own problem immediately by backing off. I wouldn’t drive all the way home with this disturbed person following me, though.

  6. No, but you should have called police once you noticed them following you. Now the kid knows where you live, and kids/people these days are crazier than hell without remorse.

Kid/truck was in the wrong 100%

Only thing you done wrong was let them follow you home honestly.

I respond with a donation from my change cup with said cars. Bit of an adrenaline rush as the local PD has the same bright lights but they’re lights are adjusted properly. But they also do not deal with the headlight issues, so someone has too.

    1. Agreed. Keep going in circles away from your home until get they get bored or the cops show up. Try to get a license plate number if possible.

      1. I learned after dealing with someone who refused to take no for an answer how to be careful from a police officer friend, especially if you drive or work at night. Alternate routes, take the next exit from highway and circle back, change lanes if you’re worried and always know the closest police departments to your destination.

And, by the way, I also flip up my mirrors for assholes who think its okay to tailgate or don’t have enough sense to adjust their headlamps so they don’t blind people. I loathe those lights!

  7. NTA. Next time drive straight to the police station. You have to be more self aware. Who the fuck argues with a complete stranger in the rain for 10 minutes??? Cut the shit and go to a safe place, like a police station, next time.
