EDIT: I ACCEPT VERDICT. IATA.
I live in a quiet private road in the UK. Next door is the only rented house in the road (see you’re already getting YATA vibes) and they are friendly but noisy. Hot tub, about 8 adult children living in a 3 bedroom bungalow, 2 dogs, people constantly coming and going etc). The owner of the house (the landlord) who is as unpleasant a man as you’ll ever meet, extended the drive way into the end of the road which was a breach of the road rules but no one did anything about it (mainly because so many other households have done the same thing). But the man renting the house is now apparently running a small cash in hand car repair service from the driveway. Not enough to cause a massive disturbance but again, its in breach of road rules and is a minor annoyance.
Recently one of the adult sons had friends gathered in the drive and he had his car stationary with the engine running for 15 minutes before I went out and asked him to please turn the engine off. He was polite but looked angry about it.
Their view is that I’m a snob and mine is that they are noisy chavs, and I think we are both right. So please, AITA?
Complaining about what you describe as ‘minor annoyance ‘ makes YTA
That doesn’t mean I’d like to be their neighbor but you have to suck up the fact neighbors will live lives differently to you.
You complained about a car engine running for 15 minutes, so not all day/night? Sounds petty.
They’re not breaking any laws, making any obscene noise, and it’s all during the day. YTA
Do not all day and night, once for 15 min. Get a life.
YTA. 15 minutes? was it 2am? Yes. life goes on all around you. Don’t want to hear sound from another human? move to the country.
YTA – leaving a car idling for 15 minutes is not a big deal. It sounds like there are other issues with the neighbors and you used this as an excuse to go complain to them.
15 mins of a car idling in their driveway doesn’t warrant you going out to complain. Sounds like you’re turning your nose up to the renters who can’t afford to buy in your neighborhood. Leave them be. YTA.
The OP is in the UK and it is illegal to leave a car idling for a considerable length of time and in the above situation, a quarter of an hour would be seen as a considerable length of time.

Find out what the local bye-laws are in your area OP and see if you can get something printed off so that you could pop it in the neighbour’s letter box just to remind them.
Not if he’s actually with the car either inside or working on it it’s not which the neighbor obviously was because he went out to speak to him.
YTA. You will be a happier person if you stop blowing a minor 15 minute annoyance way out of proportion. It is the landlord’s property, not yours. Maybe get a hobby instead of acting like an 85 year old spinster who has her nose in everyone’s business.
my neighbours do this and it’s annoying but like….whatever you know?? i’m sure we bother them when we have parties etc. i think YTA here, because i’m not sure it would bother you if it wasn’t a “chav” neighbour. my neighbour does this with their porsche lol
YTA big time.
You sound like a snob.
YTA – Unless the car didn’t have a muffler that’s hardly a nuisance. They’re right, you are a snob
