AITA for demanding my parents pay for the apps that got removed?

So for context, my laptops microphone is broken, which is fine. For school projects I normally use my phone, the teachers don’t care. But we were planning on getting it fixed. I wanted to get everything back on a hard drive because it was said they might need to do a full reset and delete everything off my laptop. My parents sent it back to them before I was able to make a copy somewhere else. I got it back and they did the full reset and I lost almost everything from it. I had some things already stored on a USB, so I got what little was on there back. But the rest is gone. And now they’re refusing to pay for the paid apps that were removed.

(I know you’re supposed to be able to reinstall apps, but where I bought them says I have to pay again. Yes I’m logged into the account I bought them on)

(Okay I realise I’m in the wrong, my bad. I’m having a shit day, that’s on me. I’ve e-mailed support with proof of purchase for that account, hopefully they fix it soon)

  1. Huh if they’re just apps, you just redownload it and then log in with your details. You don’t need to pay again to reinstall them

  2. Wouldn’t whatever apps still be paid to be downloaded again? Wouldn’t it be attached to some account?

  3. If you paid for apps, wouldn’t you have confirmations of the payment / purchases with use keys or a way to redownload them? My husband has switched apps and software that he’s purchased between devices with no issues, and that includes after reinstalling the OS.

  4. NAH – you can get the paid apps again on your profile. Also, if they gave you time to make backups and you didn’t, that’s on you.

  5. YTAH ‘My parents sent it back to them before I was able to make a copy somewhere else.’ it could be you kept putting it off or could not be bothered to do it.. how long would it have taken you, prob about an hour?..

    1. Your parents paid for it anyway, so why would they pay for you?
    2. You knew it will most likely at least get an OS reinstall, which deletes a lot of data, so you should have thought about making backup.
    1. Heck, this should be a basic thing for everyone, to have data backed up in an external drive/nas.
    3. If you paid for the apps once, there is proof of purchase and/or account tied to them, so you should know that you can get them back.
    1. Apps that are bound to a device are really rare and in your case, the device is the same, with the same MAC address.

It kinda sounds like you are either ignorant or want to scam your parents.

Okay… so why didn’t you? You say you ‘normally’ use your phone for class, so I have to assume the laptop issue has been going on for a while, and you knew it was going to be sent in for repairs. So you knew and had time to back it up.

And instead of figuring it out, contacting customer service or double checking proof of purchase on your account, you’re just skipping straight to making your parents pay for you to redownload everything?

  8. YTA. Just re-download the apps. People often re-download apps they’ve paid for. You don’t have to pay for again. Learn to do backups. Also, learn about fixing laptops. You don’t need to reset a laptop for a microphone issue. Some people just do that because it’s easier than the actual fix. If anyone has to pay for something again it should be the place that deleted everything.
