AITA for fixing the broken printer in the office?

Our office printer’s been down for days, and everyone’s going crazy. People are having to print stuff at 7-Eleven just to get work done. I know a bit about fixing printers (I used to tinker with gadgets back in high school), so I took a look, fixed the jammed paper tray, and voilà. Thing is, the IT guy’s now mad because I "went behind his back" and didn’t let him handle it. He was gonna charge ₱5k to fix it, btw. Now everyone’s saying I did a solid, but he’s giving me the stares. AITA for fixing the printer?

  1. NTA it is a territorial issue, but the thing was broken for day. It is ok if he was busy, but it allows you to cross to his territory.

  2. Sounds ridiculous and I’ll be surprised if this is a true story. A paper jam isn’t rocket science. Anyway if it’s true then obviously NTA but kinda weird you needed to make an internet post asking

  3. NTA. You saved everyone a ton of time and money. IT guy might be salty, but sometimes getting stuff done > following the “chain of command.” You did everyone a solid.

  4. IT guy here. If someone fixed a problem like that so I didn’t have to, I’d thank him/her. It’s understood that printers jam from time to time, and I much prefer that users know how to unjam a printer instead of calling us every time.

You’re NTA here. That IT guy is.

  5. How ridiculous that you think we all believe you are the only person capable of fixing a paper jam. Ridiculous post

  6. NTA.

I used to work at an insurance company with a communal printer which seemed to either jam or run out of paper.

No one knew how to deal with it and always put a ticket in for the IT/maintenance team to come and fix it. This meant my work could not be completed until it was done and then there would be a back log of print jobs.

Having worked in a small laser print shop, I learnt a few basic things and used that knowledge to “fix paper jams” and not tell anyone so I could get my work done quicker.

People actually appreciated it. I am now the guy who can fix techy things.

  7. Unjamming the printer tray is a normal thing for users to do.

If the IT guy was going to fix it, he should have showed up the first day it was reported.

  8. NTA.

    You’re the printer whisperer

And, also, our new hero for all office workers worldwide

    All hail u/Scarletti_8
