I 23f live in an apartment with 3 other females. I found this apartment on Facebook and it was completely empty so I fully furnished all of the main spaces (kitchen, living room, dining room) and found 3 roommates to move in. In the beginning things were ok, I do notice that they all were very reluctant to pay for household necessities like garbage bags and hand soap and things like that. Every time I would bring it up it would turn into them telling me that they don’t use it and they aren’t paying for it. If I don’t buy those things we just wouldn’t have them and my roommates would complain until I just caved and got them. When everyone moved in we agreed that we would split all bills equally. This included WiFi, it costs about 6 dollars a person per month. I’m a full time student so I need WiFi to be able to do my work, and last month 2 of my roommates decided they aren’t paying for it anymore and they don’t need it. They said they’ll never use the tv which has become annoying bc anytime I turn it on they apear to sit on the couch and watch with me. I tried to explain that this is a household bill and they all agreed before they moved in but they said they’re allowed to change their mind and in the end it was 3 against one and I lost. Now I’m going to have to pay for it myself even though I know for a fact that they use it. Also, they all said they are struggling with money so they can’t afford it but 2 of them order delivery food multiple times a week and one of them is currently on a backpacking trip in Asia and refused to sublet her room so her parents are still paying her rent. They are making me feel crazy for expecting them to keep up with bills and idk if I am the asshole. Please help.
These aren’t roommates they are tenants, you are subletting to them . Up the rent

And not share it with the others. Get something that tells you when someone is connected.
Get your own TV for your room, or move the one in the house to your room. Watch it there. I’ll bet that between moving the TV and cutting off the WiFi, you’ll either get some cooperation or they’ll move out.

You nta but you are letting them walk all over you .Doesn’t your WiFi have a password ? Take your soap back and forth to your room-annoying but they will get it. Also tvs can be password protected. Watch on your computer or phone for a bit to avoid sharing . I would tell them rent is going up as well to include things otherwise

Change the wi fi password do not give it out. Unless they contribute they can’t use it. I would in your new sublet contracts make sure you mention all the bills and the cost associated with it. Have a legal form. If it’s part of the rent they legally have to pay it. I would advise to make this part of the rent when you get new tenants. So if you charge $300 a month make it $350 and it includes all the items. NTA

Keep garbage bags, hand soap, dish soap, etc locked up in your room. Have your own garbage can that you only bring out for your stuff when you’re in the kitchen, etc.
Change the wifi password, and password protect the TV (assuming its a smart tv) so they can’t watch it when you aren’t there.
If you’re watching TV in the living room and they come in, turn it off and go watch TV in your room.
If they don’t want to contribute to otherwise shared amenities, then they don’t get to use them.
Either they’ll finally cave and start paying, or they’ll move out and you can get roommates who’ll actually contribute.
Or maybe its time to start looking for a place where you don’t need a roommate (or just 1 good roommate), and take all your stuff with you. They’ll get a big dose of a reality when they’re all sharing a vacant apartment lol

Change wifi password, keep supplies in your room and lock your door when you’re gone. OP, this is going to get hostile and you have 3 mooches against one. Since you furnished all of the common areas you’d be well within your rights to remove the furniture you bought as well. If someone needs the Wi-Fi, you can sell them access for a month, but cash upfront. Who’s name is on the lease, just yours or all 4? This will likely determine how petty you can get.
Change the wifi password and move the TV into your room. Boot them out of they aren’t on the main lease.

If the continue to give you crap, point out that THEY are the ones nitpicking a couple extra bucks a month. For them it’s $. For you to cover them, it’s $$.
You have to loudly say, ‘I won’t be taken advantage of.’
