AITA for getting my 9 year old daughter a kitten for her birthday?

Currently typing this from the couch because I really don’t want to go upstairs and restart the argument with my wife. It was our daughter’s 9th birthday today, so I had taken her out to buy some Switch games for her. On the way back we passed by a store, it had parrots at the storefront and my daughter wanted to go in to look at them. In there she really bonded with one particular kitten in a family of kittens, and pleaded with me if we could take him home. It was her birthday, and tbf she had been asking for a pet for a while, she’d even given us a whole presentation on that a few months ago, she’s a responsible kid, and the little guy really was cute and it seemed like they had instantly bonded so I bought her the kitten, we had to go through a bunch of stuff with the staff and we finally left with him and a bunch of supplies for him, his food, his litter. On the way back she’d even given him a name, Fluffy. I thought my wife would also be on board and it’d be a nice surprise for her too.

At home, my wife was a lot more hostile to us getting Fluffy than I had anticipated. She said it was out of the blue and it would be so much extra work, I told her we had been humoring her for a while with all the talk of a pet and she’d clearly done her research, she can handle it. I also told her I had a cat growing up too, I know what to do, it’ll be fine. She said lets not ruin her birthday and we’ll talk later, we cut her cake with some of her friends and had a good birthday dinner. Our daughter is besides herself with happiness, my wife gave her a firm talking to about how she has to be gentle with Fluffy and be responsible about his needs, and our daughter agreed.

My daughter is upstairs with Fluffy in her room, she said it was the best gift ever, my wife is upstairs too in ours. I want to know what I did, was I TA. Given the context of our daughter havinh done her research in the past and us having entertained the idea of a pet and everything?

  1. YTA. My mom became responsible for the pets I swore I could take care of as a kid. I didn’t understand it at the time.
