Yesterday, we (me, wife, two kids 8F and 6F) left for a weekend trip. A nearby city like 1.5hrs away.
We already had bags packed, and my older daughter had a backpack. When we were going to leave, I noticed that her bag looked really full, and it was because she had like 7 books. I told her to get rid of them because she didnt need them, but she refused and that turned into a ten minute thing. My wife didn’t see an issue but like the amoint of books just wasn’t necessary. And she askex for an iPad for Christmas so I don’t get why she can’t just use that.
We were running late so I took the books out annd left them at home except one or two. Plus the iPad. She was moody about it though. after we got to the hotel, my wife said that I was making a big deal out of it. Taking 7 books was just a waste of space in the car.
AITA?
I hope this is a joke. YTA. What kind of person stops their child from reading?!
YTA BIG TIME.
As a school librarian, I said YTA just from the title.
After reading your post, though?
YTMFA
YTA. The space for her backpack would’ve been the same with or without the other books. Also, who gets upset about their child taking a bunch of books? You should be proud of her.
YTA. Keeping kids reading books and away from tablets is the only hope this world has and you botched it.
YTA. What’s your deal, you don’t want your kid to read? Why?
And what did you do with all that extra space in the car?
YTA but go off and force screens on a kid who actually wants to read
YTA. As a reader, having choices is great cause you never know which book you will want to read next. And sometimes, you can read a book pretty fast on a long car ride. I used to take lots of books with me as a child when traveling. Thankfully I have a kindle now and don’t need to lug around lots of heavy books while traveling. They get to stay home now.
This is clearly rage-bait. Obviously, YTA
YTA. If my kid packed a bunch of books instead of resorting to a iPad, I would be overjoyed. You should be encouraging your daughter to read BOOKS and not iPads. They are really bad for the eyes btw. You could have told her that since they loaded down the backpack that she should make sure she could carry them all.
Tell me this is a shit post. I literally just flew to Ireland and half of my backpack was books. YTA. It’s a CAR. On a short road trip. I’ve had commutes longer than your road trip. What kind of parent discourages their child from reading?
YTA
If there was room in the backpack, there was room in the car. She’s allowed to prioritize different things for her enjoyment when traveling – assuming she had a toothbrush, clean socks, and undies, anything else was a bonus. You were being a bully. It’s not a good look in a parent.
I am a book person and many readers get real satisfaction from an actual book over some kindle e-book version. They aren’t the same.
Now that I am old and need readers, I do tend to travel with my kindle as I can increase the font size, because darnitall, the print size is SO much smaller there days. Get off my lawn 😉
This post is a joke right? YTA if she’s going to be the one dealing with the books during the trip. Just let her bring them.
Edit: Also why are we discouraging reading? It’s a good habit to build!
YTA. I seriously don’t understand parents nowadays.
The only waste of space in the car was you, it seems…
