Yesterday when I ordered my burger from a neighborhood cafe, I decided to not add a tip because I am broke. I’m struggling to even pay my rent at the moment. Yet, my friends gave me this very disappointing look. We didn’t talk about it throughout the rest of the meal, but I feel like this somehow changed their opinions about my character or whatever?
I get that the waitresses are getting paid below minimum wage and all, but I am on the edge of financial stability myself! One of those friends also said to me later on "Girl, you don’t know what it’s like to be the one serving you". Like am I really that selfish? Am I really an asshole for not tipping? It was one day I ate out!
If you can’t afford to pay for service, don’t go to places that serve you. YTA
YTA.
Don’t eat out if you can’t afford to eat out.
Why go to a cafe if you’re broke? YTA
How much was your food? If i was broke id be buying bulk bag of pasta and some sauces instead of eating out.
Perhaps don’t order out if you are that broke. YTA.
Sorry mate, YTA.
You can choose not to order a burger.
YTA. If you’re that broke, you shouldn’t be eating out. If you have no choice, consider Wendy’s or some other fast food place that doesn’t ask for tips.
YTA. I don’t eat our when I’m broke.
I’d be embarrassed to be with you.
Were you waited on? Meaning the waitress took your order at your table, brought your food, handed you your bill, and bussed your dishes? If so, you are TA and should’ve tipped. Don’t eat out if you’re broke.
If you ordered and paid at the counter before receiving your food, you are NTA.
I’m of the opinion that the tipping culture has gotten absolutely ridiculous, but if you don’t have a buck to spare maybe consider not going out to eat until you do? The servers are not going to know why you stiffed them unless you tell them, which might be a bit humiliating for you, easier to avoid the whole situation and eat cheap until you’re in a better position.🤷🏾♀️
For all the people saying YTA which country are you guys from? Cause OP would absolutely not be an AH in most south asian countries.
Also what does one do if they’re broke and can’t cook? Not order at all? A burger cost 20 I have 20 but I still don’t get to eat cause I have to pay the waitress’ wages?
Do you guys also tip grocery store baggers? And cashiers?
People will hate me but NTA. No one is obligated to tip. Ever. If the server is under paid, it is their job to demand better from their employer or find another job. It is not a customers job to subsidise their wage.
NTA as a ex server it honestly evens itself out overtime. Don’t sweat it, it really is not that big of a deal. Hope things get better for you.
