At work doing a bathroom demo (hammering tile off the walls, tearing down drywall, knocking out a wall, etc. Coworker had his phone sitting on a low ledge playing music, in the room where everything is happening. I hit a piece of tile and it falls and hits his phone, cracks the screen. One thing I will note is I was not paying attention to where his phone was, simply forgot to look down and check for that. I knew we had cleared the room of everything else that was not supposed to be demolished so my mind wasn’t there.
He’s saying he wished I would have offered to pay for it and is confused why I didn’t when I clearly did something that caused the screen to break. And I told him the phone should not have been there in the first place. I was reluctant and a little mad when he asked me to pay for it or help with the cost.
Am I being too stubborn and maybe should admit that I should watch my surroundings a little better?

Managed a construction company for almost a decade…. This is why you keep your phone in your pocket or get a full otter box.
It’s also why dewalt makes an industrial work site radio.
NTA he is responsible for keeping track of his phone and keeping it safe. You’re in an active demolition area he should know better. You are doing your job, there is no reason you should have to slow down and affect your work flow because he wanted to listen to music
NTA.
It was your action, combined with pure chance. Same could be said about his decision to put the phone in an active work site.
NTA. He shouldn’t have had his phone out at a fucking demo site in the first place. That makes zero sense. Like, if he left his phone out in the street and it got run over, should the driver be liable for the phone then too??
You don’t have anything you’re unwilling to risk getting damaged out in the open at a demo site including expensive cell phones. Your coworker should have been a lot more careful not you. NTA

He left the phone there, so he caused it.
