This occurred yesterday, then. I discovered a wallet on the ground as I was making my way home. It contained cards, an ID, and about $500 in cash. I thought, "Wow, I could really use this." When I showed it to my friends, they advised me to keep it because "finders keepers."
However, I made the decision to return the ID to its owner by calling the number on it. It turned out that they were in a very difficult financial situation, so they were shocked and incredibly appreciative. I felt good when I saw how relieved they were, but my friends are always making fun of me for not getting the money.
Reddit, thank you for being morally upright even though it cost me a little money.
Get rid of those friends, they’re not good people.
NTA. Your friends are bad people
You have integrity and honesty. Kudos to you! Your friends do not. I hope you find friends who share your values and support them, not try to tear you down to their level. Well done, sir. Well done.
NTA.
Your friends on the other hand ARE the assholes in this situation.
I’ll wager that if it was one of your friends who lost a wallet with $500 in it, they’d lament and shake their fists at the universe, cursing the vile specimen of humanity that didn’t return it to them. They’d go on about it for days.
Yet at the same time are telling you to do something that if it was done to them they’d consider the taker of the money as a cancerous polyp on the anus of humanity.
It may be time to reevaluate the friends in your life and perhaps lose some of the less moral ones.
NTA
no such thing as “Finders Keepers”
But there is theft by finding.
In the UK, “theft by finding” is a legal term for keeping property that you have found, without making reasonable efforts to return it to the owner. It is considered theft under the Theft Act 1968 if you dishonestly keep the property with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of it. To avoid being guilty of this offence, you must take reasonable steps to find the owner or hand the property in to the police or a relevant authority.
NTA. I’m not going to lie, finding that kind of money is tempting. I would think about what I was going to spend it on, but I also think about what I am going to do with the lottery money I am never going to win, lol. You did the right thing! Your morals are in the right place, and you are rewarded with knowing this person was in a much better place than they were when they thought they would never see their money again. That is a feeling that no amount of money could justify. Keep your standards, and keep making me believe in humanity again! Ditch your friends, they are not going the places you are in this life!
Wasn’t this also posted about a month ago?
YTA for posting such a stupid question..
Next time any of them complain over loosing something and it’s not returned to them just remind them of this and tell them “losers weepers”
If I ever lose my valuables I hope that someone like you finds it! Tell your friends that the “finds keepers” is actually stealing. If there was no possibility of finding the owner that’s different.
From all of us that have lost stuff thank you!! 😊
NTA Wait until the day one of them loses their wallet, they’ll be worried sick if the person the who found it had a good soul like you. Do not let anybody stop you from doing the right thing!
