AITA for saying “I hope you feel better soon” to my chronically ill girlfriend

I (19m) and my girlfriend(18f) have been dating for nearly a year now. She got diagnosed with a chronic disease about a month ago but has had symptoms for years. It’s gotten worse the past few weeks and I know this. One night a few days ago she was complaining about how much pain she was in and while reassuring her I said “I hope you feel better soon.” She got upset about this and asked me not to say something like that. I did say I wouldn’t say it again afterwards. Am I the Ahole?

  1. Literally NAH.

You said something she didn’t like, she asked you not to, you apologised and won’t say it again.

It’s dealt with… this isn’t even an aita situation really.

  2. NAH. You meant well, but the sad reality with a *chronic* illness is that she’s never going to feel better. She will always be sick. She will always be in pain.

Even so, “feel better soon” is very commonly said to sick people, so it makes sense for you to have said it without thinking about how it doesn’t work in this situation. That’s not your fault.

  3. NAH chronically ill people don’t get better soon. It is a huge thing to navigate. You meant well. It can be a learning process. You’re both young and both deserve a little grace. I don’t think someone is an AH for simply being upset.
