AITA for saying no to a vacation to a place with a travel advisory?

My parent in-laws have been planning a family vacation to include them, my wife, myself, our kids aged 2 & 6, and my brother in-law, plus his wife and kid.

The general idea of it has existed for a significant amount of time. Then yesterday, while busy at work, I received a text saying everyone’s chosen this particular destination. I look it up, and find a current travel advisory issued by our government. They plan to buy tickets in just a few hours, and I have to answer immediately.

A quick google search shows it is a hot spot for things that pose a significant safety risk to anyone there.

We would be staying in a resort – not that that makes things entirely safe. Case in point, a tourist fell victim and made news recently.

Given the impulsive nature of the scenario, my kids and my safety being main priority, and the very iceberg of brief research telling what it did, I said my kids and myself won’t be going.

I’m being met with all kinds of resistance and being made to feel like shit over it – including a “we’re going, and we’re going to have a good time” after my denial (no the hell we’re not!)

So, Reddit.. AITA for potentially ruining everyone’s great time?

UPDATE: from the US, to Nassau, Bahamas. Currently level 2. There are other islands with similar flight times that are level 1, which I’ve suggested as alternatives.

    1. I’ll bet it’s something very tame like USA traveling to Mexico, especially Cancun or similar resort city.

    1. My thoughts EXACTLY. What country are you coming from? Does anyone look like they might not be white? Don’t come here. NTA.

  1. okay but like, i need some context.. are the travel advisories issued by the USA or are they from a more reputable source :/

ultimately you have the right to decide what’s best for yourself and your family but you certainly may be overreacting and need to evaluate if the area is actually unsafe or just unsafe for idiots

  2. Where? Are you talking about Mogadishu, Cancun, or Detroit? Your description could apply to any of them, but would garner wildly different answers.

      1. I live in Minneapolis and I barely want to leave my house right now. Hard pass on coming to the States.

  3. YTA. Where is the vacation? Because there is a huge difference between a country actively at war vs. one where there is violence or crime happening in isolated areas that are very easy to avoid.

Not sure what country you’re in, but U.S. travel advisories are famously over-exaggerated and tend to paint safe countries in very negative terms.

Tourists can “fall victim” in France or Germany or Italy or the United States just as they can in a Global South country that has a stigma attached to it. You should do more research before jumping to conclusions.

  4. It would depend massively on where tbh. I’m in the UK and I believe that there isn’t an advisory for the USA currently, but there is no way you’d catch me going anywhere near America for the foreseeable future as a mixed race woman with a Middle Eastern surname.
