AITA for searching my grandpa’s house before checking my own room?

Last Wednesday, I had to bring my ID to school to sign up for an exchange student program. After school, I went to visit my grandpa, which I usually do about once a week. I stayed at his place for around an hour or two and then went to my parents’ house.

However, I left my wallet at my grandpa’s house without realizing it. I didn’t notice until Friday, when I went back and picked it up. However, I didn’t check the contents of my wallet at the time.

On Saturday, I finally checked and realized my ID was missing. I immediately panicked. I was worried that I might have dropped it somewhere and that someone could have picked it up and used it for identity theft.

Before going to the police, I went back to my grandpa’s house because I assumed that if I had lost it, that was the most logical place. He’s 81 (though he doesn’t have dementia or anything like that), so I thought he might have picked it up and forgotten where he put it. I searched everywhere furniture, bed, closets but couldn’t find it. At that point, I was convinced I had lost it in public. I went to the police station with my dad and filed a missing ID report.

On Sunday, while cleaning my room, I found my ID under the school paperwork related to the exchange program. I was extremely embarrassed. I told my parents what happened, and they were very upset. They said I had been a huge asshole for basically blaming my grandpa, going through his entire house, and not even bothering to check my own room first.

I sent my grandpa a text apologizing, but I honestly don’t understand why my parents think I’m such an asshole. In my opinion, my reaction was reasonable, I genuinely believed my grandpa’s house was the most likely place I left it, and my concern about identity theft was real.

AITA?
