AITA for taking my dead grandfathers car

So my grandfather whom passed away about 5 years ago and he left behind very little for me and my siblings as his kids took all of it expect his car which no one wanted but me, it was broken down didn’t want to start and had a sizable amount rust and after 5 years of blood, sweat and lot of tears and money I got it working and put in my name but now that it’s working both my aunt and dad are saying they own the car and wanting to sell or get $5000 for simply being my grandfathers kids say they rightfully own it even though they rather sell or leave it to rot, but I stonewalled even attempt its breaking my relationship with my dad but after 5 years of work to it. I think it’s rightfully mine specially since my grandfather had no will for the car.
So am I the asshole?

    1. I’ll have to search more on but in Australia pretty sure once it’s in your name on the registration it’s yours legally

  1. NTA give them a bill for all the parts/labour you’ve put into it. 5 years is a long time and a lot of work

    1. Ha I wish my skills as a mechanic and fitter mean nothing apparently so even I did I’d just get laugh out the conversation like I do when I talk about my skills I learnt as a fitter and turner cause my dad still thinks I’m a kid with zero knowledge and experience I’m 19 BTW and been working on cars since 15 and other labourer jobs since said age and my aunt thinks I’m a good for nothing, whom she consistently threatens to kick out like I care tho I’d just take my stuff and cars move in with my mum

      1. Doesn’t matter !!! You still the work and put in the time which is worth $$$

You give them a bill and say until it’s paid , you are legally driving the car . Upon payment you will transfer the title .

          1. Keep a copy of the bill for yourself too . Write down what you did , what you bought. Every nut and bolt that can remember . Cleaned the seats ? That’s an hour of labor.. changed the tires ? Ditto..

          2. Make sure you charge the standard rate . In my area shops charge $120-150 per hour to do anything .

    2. I was going to say the same. The car was rusty, not running, and unwanted until you put the work into it. Now that you have invested into it and labored they see the chance to make a profit. Legally they can probably claim the car, but calculate every part you paid for and every hour of labor you put into it then bill them.

  2. Well, no, you’re not an AH. But depending on the laws in your country you might be a thief. I would go seek legal advice as soon as possible if I were you.

Will have to go with NAH for the minute. Your aunt and father may be correct that they rightfully own it so check that out first and foremost

    1. Five years, no move to claim it despite knowing OP had it in his possession, legally registered in OP’s name…yeah, I doubt their relatives have any legal civil or criminal action to pursue.

If need be, OP can strip out all the parts they put in and have the car towed to in front if his complaining relatives “in the condition it originally came inti their possession”.
