I (42F) was on a very short plane journey this morning, and my daughter (3F) and I had a row to ourselves. YAH!
A family came and sat in the row of 3 seats across from us, with the Dad in the centre and his two girls (approx 7 & 9) either side. The Mum is sitting in the row in front on her own, whole row to herself. Good for her.
The flight takes off, and I hear the Dad say to the younger daughter she can use her iPad – which is turned on and a movie is started at a loud audible level for me. During this time my daughter and I had been playing and then she was watching a show on her iPad with earphones.
I looked over at the Dad, as the noise was irritating me and could hear her movie quite clearly, and asked would he mind if she turned it down. He then proceeded to say – it’s not that loud – but she turned it down. I responded by saying, maybe she should wear earphones if watching a show on public transport.
Needless to say, it was an awkward flight to say the least.
No more was said. Though the Dad and said daughter later on flight continued to play a game on the iPad, volume high, and I had to listen to constant beeps, rings and game noises for the last 15 mins.
So internet, am I the asahole? Am I the only one who thinks it’s incredibly rude to play music/have volume high on phone/iPads whilst on public transport?
The attendant should announce headphones required when using device.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard that announced in Europe.
KLM announced it on their flights-SFO to AMS last Christmas and the return.
Hmm maybe Ryanair need to catch up on European short haul flights 😡
NTA, that is super rude, but on a plane I would probably ask the flight attendant, as people a lot of the time respond better to that. If they say they can say anything (not sure of the rules) I would probably say something but try to be as nice as possible, like apologetic, ONLY because people do what you want more often if you do lol. But I don’t blame you for being annoyed!!
NTA. If you’re using a device in a public setting, it either needs to be on silent or you use headphones / earphones etc. it doesn’t matter if you are 3 or 33.
Agreed. My 13yr old just got a phone for Xmas (“Santa” overruled mum and dad – as planned) and we just gave him an old set of ear buds to use for this very reason.
As little kids all 3 have hated headphones and its complicated when they are all watching the same show but we still used headphones and found away to make it work as much as we could in public
NTA.
Most flights include an announcement “feel free to use your personal entertainment devices as long as you use headphones.” No one needs to watch Dora or Barney for the duration of the flight.
NTA, and they give out free headphones for just that reason.
Big, big part of the rage I feel at the dying of the headphone jack – a cheap set of earbuds is no longer universal unless you rely on BlueTooth or hope for the right connector.
You should have then called the flight attendant, that’s their job.
NTA – I take the train to work and it’s so annoying when someone decides to listen to music loudly or have a loud conversation in an otherwise quiet car
NTA. If you’re watching your phone in ANY public space you should be using earbuds or keeping volume to a minimum.
NTA that’s what headphones are for. Why did those children not have them???
I am surprised the flight attendant didn’t say anything. I was on a flight once, and while waiting for take off, I was playing my Nintendo. I totally forgot about the game sound, it was low, but still on. The flight attendant was walking by and reminded me to turn off the sound.
