AITA for walking on shampooed carpet with shoes

So I’m really confused as to what I could have done differently in this situation. My roommate wanted to shampoo the carpet today, not a big deal. I have to go to the store and go to work so I need to walk outside to do that. I get around put my shoes on and grab the trash on my way out. When I reach the trash can my roommate asks if I’m really wearing shoes right now. I respond yeah I’m grabbing the trash and leaving I need my shoes on. They proceed to say whatever in a rude tone and put on headphones to block me out. I’m just so confused how else am I supposed to leave without stepping on the carpet at some point it covers the entire floor from my room to the front door. All the furniture also had things on them so it’s not like I could sit in a chair closer to the front door to put my shoes on and take less steps. Am I just super oblivious to how shampoo in a carpet works? Does wearing shoes affect it more than just my bare feet?

Edit: I was a thoughtless ass and I should have thought for a second about not just the carpet but my roommates time. I will apologize to them when I’m home from work and be less stubborn in the future. Thanks for everyone’s feedback.

  1. YTA. I don’t know a situation where it’s not rude to wear outside shoes on a freshly cleaned floor. Wear house slippers or socks and put your shoes on right beside the door. Do you have a physical limitation that requires you sit when putting on shoes?
