I (27m) found some white pants that I thought looked really cool. However, the only issue is after I brought them, I found that in some certain light you can kind of see through them. Nothing obscene, just the pattern on my underwear and maybe some leg hair, but that’s only if you really look.
Anyway I got compliments on it from my buddy “Ray” (28m) on them once and to make him laugh I showed him how how they could be see through. He just laughed and also mentioned he hadn’t noticed until I pointed it out.
Anyway the other night Ray and I met up with a woman he was talking to and one of her friends. When we were about to leave my place (the women weren’t there yet), Ray recognized the white pants and asked if it was a good idea to wear them. I pointed out we were going to a dark bar at night. We went out, the dates both went fine.
The next time we hung out Ray said that he was frustrated I couldn’t clean up better and he didn’t want both of us to look like creeps. I pointed out the pants were not see through in the dark and the woman I was with even complimented me on them. It’s not that deep but Ray still seemed pissed. AITA?
NAH. You can wear what you wish. Similarly, Ray can choose to not go out with you for any reason he wishes.
Are these linen pants? Why would you look like creeps? What shirts were you wearing? Did you otherwise look rough?

It’s also possible the pants look so awesome, when he’s next to you it diverts the girls eyes to the contrast of your pants. Makes his style look subdued next to you?
I’m not going to call you names, but I would not be wearing pants that allowed people to see my underwear or “some hair”. Ugh. 😑
Or at least don’t wear patterned underwear under white trousers…..

NAH. Ray does not like your personal choices. You dont seem to think that visible underwear patterns is that big of a deal. Visible hair thru those pants? Again, you dont think that is a big deal. You are free to wear anything you like. From an etiquette perspective, there are going to be contrasting opinions on where you are going.
Some restaurants require formal attire. If you show up there in shorts, YTA. Similarly, if you show up to a black-tie event with those pants, YWBTA. If you show up in a nightclub with blue lights and have some absolutely crazy print on your underwear that is visible, you would be noticed and probably considered cool.

But, invest in some nude (to your skin tone) undies for these pants and nobody will notice they are see through. So many people will buy white undies, but nude is the way to go.
You’re aware of the issue, and wore them to a dark place where the light wouldn’t be a problem. I don’t see the problem.
You went out to a bar with semi translucent white linen pants and a sweater? I think your friend was actually holding back. Thats a fashion crime and not something that should be worn on a date if you’re not at a spanish seaside resort, and even then.. nah.
