So backstory to this bet, I am a college student, and with that (not a rich one) I am home for winter break. I go to the casino with a friend who has a job that pays him very well for the age we are and waiting a week to get the money he spotted me makes no impact into his life. He spotted me $100 after I lost all my money while I was on tilt, I tell him I’m already broke and would take time to pay him back. Two days later after he spotted me I sent him $50 to cover half of what I owe him. Then tonight at a friend house we wager a friendly game of baccarat, me being the house him being the player. I come up off him around $200. Once it was all said and done, I tell him “Don’t worry about it, we can play another shoe so you can try and win it back” then the night never continued so nothing happened further, but he refuses to pay me out. (I actually won , one more hand for $50 so technically I won $250 off him) but then he retracts the bet and immediately asks for the $50 I owe him still. Which would put me at $150 or $200 however you want to look at it. I tell Him no, he owes me. So basically what I’m asking is , AITA for refusing to pay him back the original $50 considering he won’t pay me what I won on our wager?
TL;DR: I owe friend money, I want that money plus some and he refuses to pay me and wants what I owe him.
NTA but for the love of god, stop gambling. It’ll ruin your life.
Why are you gambling with money that you don’t have FFS.
Ok this wasn’t meant to be a lesson on gambling, I can and was willing to pay him back, the money was inconsequential at the moment as I am not currently working and they knew that.
So pay him back, and you know you’ve done the right thing and fulfilled your obligations. If he still refuses to pay you, you know where you stand – this guy isn’t your friend.
ESH. Getting a loan from a friend is risky, doing it for gambling is just silly. You don’t have to pay him back if the money evened out with another game, but you might want to do so anyway just to reduce some of the tension. Almost always a bad idea to mix money with friends.
ESH, don’t gamble with money you don’t have. Any hypothetical debt ledger between friends sucks.
My head hurts from trying to read this.
Are you seven years old?
Nope.
One: This person clearly isn’t someone to trust or call a friend. Two: You admit that you aren’t well off, so stop gambling. gambling is a mugs game. And if you do gamble, only play with your own money, never use anyone else’s money
YTA. Here is why.
I make a differentiation between hard cash and theoretical money.
Your friend loaned you hard cash. You know you owe them that.
You both bet theoretical cash. No money was put down. I personally never see a theoretical bet between friends as anything more than a game.
A loan of bank notes is real. A fun bet where you don’t place the money down at point of placing the bet isn’t real.
Pay your friend back the fifty. Move on and be a good friend.
