I was staying in a hostel in Budapest and went to a music festival, came back and was smoking out the window, they came barging in and were going ballistic and I point blank lied and said it wasn’t me.
They said you pay $800 Euro before you leave. I said you’re absolutely kidding yourself, I’m not paying that when you didn’t even knock and barged in, I could have been getting changed.
Running on 2 hours sleep, exhausted from the festival, I had to go down there to give the key back etc and they still tried to charge me the $800. I kicked off, said I shouldn’t have to pay that money, there was no damage, there was quite literally 7 other people hanging out windows smoking (which was the truth). I ended up saying I have 50k followers and I am going to absolutely blast you on social media and give you terrible reviews. I caused that much of a scene they said “ok just leave you’re banned” AITA? I feel like they were trying to scam me. Yes I did the wrong thing, but they shouldn’t have barged through the room without knocking, and $800 fine? Really…

If it changes anything, I suppose they catch violators of that rule very often, and collect on the 800 Euro very seldom.

No consideration that you are ruining the place for other travelers, then having a temper tantrum in the lobby and being willing to destroy the small business because someone wanted accountability.
