For a little context, I love animals, and I hate it when people get them without thinking about it first. I come from a family that impulse buys animals, and it hurts me so much to see them neglected because we don’t have the time or money.
My sister has 3 pitbull-like dogs in a small house. Her boyfriend, we will call him Mike, was the one that got them. Even though they don’t have the time to train them, or the money to give them toys and space. This has led to them being rowdy and destructive. I can understand when you get frustrated with an animal for doing something bad, but what i dont understand is why they would get 3 large dogs in the first place! So Mike complains a lot about them and he wants to move. Howev, he doesn’t want to take them with him and has mentioned several times putting them in a shelter, like the humane society. I always tell him that he shouldn’t do that. They are pitbulls. They will most likely be euthanized. He bought that dogs! Him and my sister both did. They made that commitment. Now they want to kill them because they are to.much to handle!? I just don’t understand how he can think that that is okay.
Today, they were talking about getting a place and he said something about the humane society. So I again told him that they would most likely get euthanized because of their breed. My sister shushed me. I tried to reason and say that there is another shelter that takes in pitbulls and protects them, but they just ignored me and walked out of the house with Mike looking pissed at me. My dad said that I shouldn’t have said anything and it was none of my business and not my problem. He said that they were going through their own thing and I should just stay out of it. They are not my dogs, so why would I care.
I know I’m a bit of a know it all, and I get into problems that I don’t need to be in. But I believe that if you don’t say nothing, then nothing happens. So if I see something that I think is wrong, I’m going to point it out. But maybe I did cross a line. After all, I have said it a ton of times so he probably got the point. And I knew he already didn’t like me because I bothered him about his turtle needing a UV light. i can be insistent and annoying. I just don’t think it’s right that an innocent animal has to suffer because of your mistake. That don’t have a lot of money, and are in a lot of debt. They are stressed, and I’m not helping buy saying they are going to kill their dogs. And I’m 19, so they don’t want to listen to advice from someone who is barely an adult. I can see where I could be in the wrong.
So, am I the asshole?
NTA pets aren’t things to be thrown out once the novelty wears off. They are family and deserve better. You’re the only one with common sense in your family it seems.
I learned from their mistakes. As I’m sure all parents want of their children.
Stay out of it. They are an incredibly dangerous breed. The fewer of them that are on the Earth, the fewer that can get into irresponsible hands.

Very tricky, people see animals in different ways and when family is involved even harder, i’d say stay away…
YTA. Your family are not taking good care of these dogs, and untrained, uncontrolled pitbulls are dangerous. The shelter might be able to find them good owners. They are not guaranteed to die in the shelter just because they’re pitbulls. If a shelter does put down a dog it will usually have a good reason.
Give your parents the name of the breed rescue to pass on to your sister and then stay out of it unless you can take one of the dogs. NTA, but dogs continuing to stay with people who do not love them or want them is a recipe for dog neglect, dog abuse and dog deaths. Do not force anyone to take care of an animal they don’t want through coercion which is what you’re trying to do. I volunteer for a rescue and people who don’t want their pets do horrible things to them.
My mom was actually the one who told me about it in front of my sister. I just brought it up again. And I didn’t think about that. Making the dogs stay somewhere they are unwanted can lead to abuse. While I don’t believe my sister and her boyfriend would intentionally harm their dogs. It is stressful and expensive to keep them there. I should have considered that.
Idk, are you ok with killing cows or giving them a bad life for food? Not sure how a dog is so different
I do eat meat, but I hate factory farming. If we are going to eat animals, this think they should live happy lives until then. Factory farms should be banned.
