WIBTA if I dump my snow on my neighbours driveway

Today I (23m) had to wake up early before work to shovel the driveway and sidewalk so I could get my car out. I have an niceish gas snow plow that pumps out black tar, but gets the job done. Anyways, it was 5 in the morning and I revved that baby up and got it done in 10 minutes flat, I even cleaned my neighbours side because he and his family share the driveway with me. Pretty timely if you ask me

Following this I left to work and when I got home my neighbour left a note wedged inside my screen door saying “keep it fucking down in the morning you \*\*\*ch” now I am Turkish, so that specific insult reached a dark place in me. For context, I share a wall with these neighbours, and they constantly have a baby screaming through all hours of the night, and now they are complaining that I snow plowed on one of the worst snows this winter? Now I am thinking about shovelling with a normal shovel, but piling all my snow up behind my neighbours car. Personally, I think it’s completely valid but my roommate thinks it’s a bad idea

  1. It’s not worth starting a feud with your neighbors, whom you are presumably stuck with until either your or their lease is up (or until someone sells if you own your homes).

Next time just don’t plow their driveway.

  2. YTA. You started being the asshole when you cranked up a noisy gas engine plow at 5 am. That was just plain rude.

  3. Yta for using a snowblower at 5am. You aren’t the only person in the world. Comparing a snowblower to a baby is ridiculous. Yta for that too

  4. YTA. 5am is way too early to be running a gas snowplow, that’s unreasonable. Also, what time do you have to leave for work? You said you had to wake up early to shovel, but you also said it only took you 10 minutes, could you have waited until 10 minutes before leaving?

Also, can you explain the relevance of being Turkish and taking extra offense to being called a bitch?

  5. YWBTA.

Babies cannot be reliably silenced, and are just….part of life, unless you’ve come up with another way of continuing the human species that you’d care to share with the class. A loud, gas-powered appliance at 5am in a neighborhood is a deliberate choice that is widely considered rude. Doubling down by starting a feud with your neighbors doesn’t reflect well on you and won’t be worth it.

  6. YTA. Your neighbour could’ve been a little nicer about it, but who the fuck uses a snowplow at 5am?! And what does being called a bitch have to do with being Turkish? It’s a normal, non racist insult. And yeah, escalating makes you an ever bigger asshole. You don’t have to plow his half, but you don’t make it worse either.

  7. YTA. Your neighbor doesn’t have control of when the baby starts crying. You, on the other hand, have 100% control over when you decide to fire up the snow blower, and 5am is early enough to violate noise ordinances pretty much everywhere that has one. Noise ordinances are usually a decent yardstick by which to measure whether an amount and/or timing of noise is reasonable.

  8. I have no clue where you live, but if you got anywhere near the amount of snow we have these past couple of weeks a 5 AM snow removal is not unusual. And if the guy with the “loud snow plow “ is getting my driveway too? I’ll bring him coffee and muffins, not complain about the noise.

    1. I can only assume these people calling OP the AH dont deal with winter storms and think a snowblower is like a lawnmower.

  9. NTA, but i wouldn’t recommend trying to get revenge of any kind on your neighbors; that could easily escalate and make life for both you and them awful. I think a simple note to respond would be a much better idea. Something like:

“Hi, this is your neighbor. The noise you heard from me the other morning was me clearing snow from our shared driveway after a massive snowstorm. I needed to get to work and my car couldn’t get through that much unplowed snow.
I understand that you guys have a baby, but that doesnt make it ok for you to call me a “b**ch” in your note. If you had an issue with the noise, you couldve responded calmly and civilly instead of resorting to name calling. For the record, the noise from your baby is something that we can hear through the walls and keeps us up at night also. But we never complain bc we understand that you guys are just parents trying your best. Perhaps you could learn to treat us with a similar amount of grace going forward, instead of leaving rude notes on our door.
I get that you guys need sleep, but talking to your neighbors calmly will always get better results than cussing them out. Do better.”

  10. Everyone that is saying you shouldn’t snowblow at 5am should take a couple minutes to do some google/reddit searching. OP is 100% in the right for snowblowing anytime he needs to because of significant snowfall. It is considered a safety issue, and noise ordinances do not apply. I bet the neighbor did not grow up in a snowy area and is new to this.
