I (17F) am currently practicing fasting for lent,(that also means I should be eating meals with chicken, pork, beef, etc.) Now I kind of have a track record of skipping meals because I had to leave the house earlier than usual for school/mass duties, which led to my parents getting upset and forbidding me to skip any more meals because its a waste of time preparing me breakfast if I’m not gonna eat them. (fair enough)
After that, I pretty much avoided skipping meals unless when I was ready to leave the food wasn’t done yet, (at least it could be prepared for my brother instead) Even when I’d be running late for classes.
As for the current situation, yesterday I’ve told them multiple times that I couldn’t eat so and so, but they seemed to dismiss my request since I’m the only one practicing the fast. And since skipping dinner wasn’t an option I had to eat some chicken instead since my dad wouldn’t allow me to waste some gas on cooking a new side dish.
Now I have to eat beef for breakfast, usually I wouldn’t complain because beef is well- good but now I can’t have that. They’re telling me to eat it because their reasoning is: "We’ll you’ve already broken it yesterday, might as well just eat"
WIBTA if I just skipped meals and bought my own
Are you fasting for all of lent as your sacrifice? The only required fasting days (for Catholics) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Yeah most Catholics I know will do no dessert and avoid snacking between meals but never skip meals for fasting throughout Lent, particularly Fridays, except for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Yeah. I’m trying to get to the bottom of what OP meant, also, she said “should be eating meals with chicken, pork, beef). I think she meant not? But also giving up meat is only on Fridays during lent (and Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) and in the US the fasting age is 18-59, so she’s technically not in the fasting age range.
Yeah the whole post is confusing.
I wouldn’t go for buying meals but that’s just because I put more emphasis on the almsgiving part of Lent than fasting and it would feel like a waste of money I could donate instead.
Some Catholics fast for all of lent (minus sundays). And avoid all meat other than fish during the season. Not all Catholics. But I was raised catholic and it while it wasn’t required maybe 1/10th of the adults I knew would fast. Technically I was taught you are supposed to fast but it just isn’t something widely done anymore. Children and anyone ill are excused from fasting. So OP would be excused for being a minor.
> And since skipping dinner wasn’t an option
Huh? Yesterday was Fat Tuesday, lent begins today.
Forgive me if this is a weird question (I’m not Christian), isn’t fasting for Fridays of Lent (Good Friday included) and Ash Wednesday? What is the purpose of fasting all Lent?
This is out of pure curiosity and to know the information before commenting on the situation and good next steps. But I also love learning about other people’s views on belief and what they believe. 😊
Mild ESH. Today is the first day of Lent and from what you say, you just told them yesterday what you can’t eat for your chosen fast. That’s not much time for them to prepare by having vegetarian or fish or egg alternatives on hand for you to make yourself. But they shouldn’t compel you to eat food you’ve chosen not to; surely they are serving components of the meal that aren’t meats?
Are you using religion to justify an eating disorder?
Yes.
Two weeks, op didn’t know what apostles are. Now they’re super devout and also lives in the only house on earth where breakfast is a pile of beef.
I’m confused. Did you mean to say you can’t eat meat? Assuming that’s the case, why can’t you eat the parts of the family meals that *aren’t* meat?
This post is all over the place.
>>fasting
My dictionary says fasting means you’re skipping food altogether for a specific time period. What do you mean by fasting?
>>I couldn’t eat so and so
What specifically can’t you eat?
>>had to eat some chicken instead
Instead of what?
>>Now I have to eat beef for breakfast…but now I can’t have that [beef].
>>that also means I should be eating meals with chicken, pork, beef, etc.
Which is it, you can have beef or not? Your post says both things.
This doesn’t make sense.
That’s not how Lent works
YTA. Dude. Please just eat. 12 days ago, you didn’t even know what the apostles were. Now you’re “fasting for lent”. I think your parents are worried about you missing meals and want you to eat at least three meals a day or at least two meals and a little something for breakfast. This isn’t healthy.
