I have started collecting (and playing with) a popular 90s game and a local store stocked up on only a few of these games (difficult to come across brand new and boxed). I bought the last two (to collect) and had purchased one a few days prior to unbox and play.
The thing is, the employee at the store told me about how they really want to purchase it but can’t justify spending a lot of money on it. I had seen them fiddle with it when I was there the first time and they actually removed one from the shelf to reserve for themselves.
I saw that they had placed it back on the shelf when I returned again and I quickly snagged up the last two boxes; I made sure that this employee left so I wasn’t served by them and was served by someone else.
Panic ensued when I realised they had come back and stood behind the counter behind the employee serving me and said, “oh, you’re buying the last one- have you been enjoying the game?” I said yes, became embarrassed and left quickly. I could tell from their face they weren’t too happy to see the last two boxes snagged up as their expression dropped. I feel bad now. Was I the asshole?

YTA. And you know it. Hoarding a game that it sounds like you have multiple copies of and sneakily bought out from under someone was a shit thing to do. Games are meant to be enjoyed, not sit on a shelf collecting dust.
INFO: was there a reason to buy 2 for your collection instead of just 1?
Edit: YTA – see comments to OP’s reply
I N F O: are these different boxes of the same game items or are they identical to what you already bought? And also, how time passed between you buying the first one and the last two? If you waited only a couple days, that’s super fast. If you waited a couple weeks, well they had their chance.
I don’t see the point in buying a game you’re not going to play. If the game could go to someone that’s going to use it that’s the best outcome. Buying it just to put it on a shelf when you know other people are trying to get it (and maybe saving for it) is rude. I guess soft YTA because you can buy whatever you want but I would definitely consider this to be selfish and not community oriented
YTA. You’re like those low lifes that buy all the Pokemon cards and don’t leave any for other people. Just look at tiktok at this deplorable behavior.
What’s with the greedy hoarding people do? Why do you need multiple of the same thing? I get two- one for playing one for a sealed collectors item, but any more than that is just sad.
Right? Like how embarrassing to be a fully grown man waiting in a parking lot to stalk target for Pokémon or hot wheels
YTA. Collectors ruin hobbies for the rest of us
YTA. Based on your comments, the items you bought are all identical.
Having one to keep in the box and one to actually play with makes sense, but buying a third is just greed.
The employee is a complete red herring here. It doesn’t matter whether it was an employee or another customer, you’ve still prevented a possible fan from enjoying the experience of that game… just so it can sit on your shelf next to its duplicate.
Edit- I’m a also collector
Yeah two I could maybe understand but three when you know it’s a hard to get items seems a bit much

It sucks that some people view collectibles as long term investments instead of just a person buying something they wanted as a kid but couldn’t afford until they became an adult
Do what you want…you can collect as an investment if you so choose
But people are absolutely going to have a problem with you if you do
Can’t have it both ways
YTA, this is just scalper behaviour amd I don’t support that.
By the way you are trying to obfuscate what it is that you bought alone tells me that you know you are the AH.
Collecting is one thing, but you’re making it sound like you just wanted them all for no reason. YTA
