AITA for cancelling and taking another driver ?

Hello,

Today I took a cab because my usual driver cancelled on me last minute. I don’t usually take cabs but I had too last week because he wasn’t available to take me to work. No problem on this end.

I am late to work so I rush to the app take a driver, he is far away maybe 10 minutes and going in the opposite direction, on the map I saw other cabs near me, so I cancelled two times because he kept accepting my demand and took another cab that was close and arrived in 2 minutes. As we’re going, 6 minutes, I see the other cab, is shouting at us while we’re waiting at the red light?

He said I took two cabs at the same time and he recognized me because he used to take me? I didn’t recognize him at all and was speechless that he was shouting at me for cancelling when I cancelled TWO TIMES because he was far away on the app, he said the app has a bug and I should have waited and started saying I am not loyal??? He is not even my usual driver ?

Honestly I was already late to work so I didn’t respond and asked the other cab to go.

But AITA for cancelling?

  1. NTA. You canceled fairly, all g. He was far away, and the app kept assigning him despite your cancellations. You’re not like “disloyal,” and you’re not obligated to wait for a driver who’s inconvenient, especially when it affects your work. His reaction is completely on him, don’t worry 😉

  2. NTA. His reaction was extreme and scary. In fairness to him accepting the trip twice, if it’s through Uber, it doesn’t show drivers how far away they are to you. It just gives them a requested notification. It’s only once they accept that they see how far away they are, but it’s my understanding that they can’t then cancel without penalties. It also doesn’t show them who’s booked the car until they accept the trip, so he might not have known it was the same person until after the trip was booked.

  3. No, you’re not the villain in a low-budget remake of Taxi Driver — you cancelled because he was 10 minutes away and driving in the opposite direction, not because you launched a personal betrayal campaign.
It’s a ride-hailing app, not a loyalty program or a marriage contract; you’re allowed to cancel when someone’s far and pick the driver who can actually get you to work on time.
