AITA for filming my teacher to prove to my mother that the school is lying?

Aitah for filming my teachers voice to prove a point to my mother that the school is lying?

I (15yrfm) have been getting yelled at by my math teacher. lets call her S. for stupid things. and it’s not just me, it’s the entire class. like getting a question wrong or talking when she’s outside of the room. I have PTSD from things my parents did and that was put into my school record when I came to this school. I am in 8th grade. my therapist and physciatrist put it into my record stating that I needed headphones because of the teachers yelling because it was causing my anxiety to flare up. well, one night my teacher was yelling at me again and I put my hand on my ear (I did have my headphones but I was scared to put them on because I thought she might break them) and she yelled at me "TAKE YOU’RE HAND OFF YOU’RE EAR I’M NOT EVEN YELLING THAT LOUD". I was filming on my phone -either for that incident or a different one. because the night before I had asked my mom if the school tried to deny the fact that they have teachers who yell. she said they did. so I asked her if she’d be okay with me filming on my phone of the teacher yelling. she said yes. so I filmed on my phone when she was yelling and also how loud the cafeteria was. I had certain friends who knew I was filming but weren’t in my math class. my math teacher has no idea I filmed her voice (not face). and my history teacher confirmed days later that it is okay to film in public places. (I know there are schools that consider classrooms private. mine is one of them). so I showed the recording to my mother once I had it of my math teacher yelling. AITAH for filming my math teachers voice, catching the physical evidence of her yelling, or do I just need to do charter school because I can’t handle " teachers authority"?

If you all want to see the video, DM me so I can send you the link. or if you want more info DM me.

  1. NTA. I’ve been outside my kid’s classroom and the teacher denied yelling until I told her I’d been outside the door for 20 minutes listening to her berate 7 year olds for that whole time. Escalated it to the principal. Did nothing.

  2. NTA. You did the right thing and I’m so happy your mom backed you up on this. And no you don’t need to change schools. But use your headphones that is why it’s in your school file that you are required to use them when things get to loud. Stay strong and remember you have done nothing wrong. Sending you hugs from an internet stranger.

  3. NTA. Are you asking this because your mother doesn’t think you should have recorded it, or is refusing to pay attention to it? If so, you need to reach out to someone in the school.

    1. No my mother is taking it seriously but the problem is, is that the school is defending my teacher and now trying to punish me and basically calling me a liar.

  4. If you’re in the US you can get a list of all the school board members and send the video to them. Your mom can have her lawyer talk to the school about the video, so they take it very seriously.

  5. Then you need to go higher up, write an email to the superintendent and include the video. Find out who the school board members are.

  6. This isn’t making sense. Your teacher was yelling at night? SO many kids claim they’re being targeted and honestly, your ptsd might be clouding your judgement. Show the video to another adult, preferably your psychologist. Not your parent who probably also struggles with mental illness or other issues, considering they’re the ones who gave you ptsd…

  7. Do more filming, document every instance as they happens (day, time and a brief explanation of the abuse) as much as you can. After you have sufficient evidence you can go to the school district superintendent or local education authority to make a report. If you already reported this to the principal and they straight up lie and cover abuse, it’s time to go to higher authorities.

  8. NTA. You obviously have auditory sensitivity issues that are either related to past trauma, as you’ve indicated or you may have undiagnosed autism spectrum disorder. My wife had similar issues growing up and still to this day. Even if that isn’t the case, there’s absolutely no excuse for a teacher to be yelling like that at any student in a classroom. Recording the audio is necessary for you to take to the school district administration. This teacher needs to be disciplined or fired.
