Long title I know.
To explain the situation, the garage has one of those metal rolling clothing racks in front of the laundry machine. We use it to dry our clothes and it’s usually in front of my car.
I never have trouble with it being there because we have those garage parking balls hanging from the ceiling that lets me know when to stop.
Today however, I just got back from cat-sitting and I was pulling my car into the garage. I’m focusing on the ball and I’m waiting for it to hit the windsheield, when I realized I hit the clothing rack. Not with much speed, but when I checked my car there was a scrape on the paint; really shifted my mood.
I told my dad why didn’t he move the clothing rack back as he knew I was heading home. But instead of apologizing he got mad at me and said its my fault I didn’t pay attention and hit it.
I just want to know whose in the wrong, AITA?
EDIT: Thank you everyone for your inputs. I am in the wrong and I plan on apologizing to my Dad for my outburst. I’ll pay attention from now on.
YTA for not paying attention. Things move in the garage.
What if a person had been standing there? Would you have just been focused on the ball?
YTA. Part of being responsible enough to be allowed to drive is paying attention to what’s around you so you don’t hit things. You can’t just go on autopilot and assume everything will be where you expect it to be. Cars pull out from cross streets unexpectedly, animals run into the road, debris blows into the street, roadsigns and patterns change, etc.
YTA. You are driving. You are entirely responsible in making sure you don’t hit things.
YTA
If you can’t tell you are going to hit something by using your eyes, then you shouldn’t be driving.
YTA. Was he the one driving? Look where you’re going next time
You. You’re in the wrong. You should have been looking at the totality of your surroundings and not just relying on that visual aid.
YTA. You were driving, a huge part of driving is being aware of your surroundings. Be glad you learned this lesson in a garage with a stationary, inanimate object.
Pay attention, it’s free!
You were driving.
You weren’t paying attention.
You are responsible.
YTA.
YTA. The rack was a stationary object. You were the one moving. If you are such a bad driver that you need intense focus on a ball to the ignorance of everything else around you, you need more lessons before you hurt someone on the roads.
YTA
You’re the one not paying attention. If something was in the way you get out and move it, not drive into it.
You did hit the rack. So you are responsible.
Sure, Dad didn’t make it easier for you, but you were driving.
Pay better attention. Don’t rely on Daddy to make your life easier.
YTA – maybe look at what’s in front of you while driving?
Yta. What if it hadnt been something as inconsequential as a clothing rack? Just bc the hanging ball is there doesnt mean that nothing else will move in the area. Learn to drive properly
>I’m focusing on the ball and I’m waiting for it to hit the windsheield…
>But instead of apologizing he got mad at me and said its my fault I didn’t pay attention and hit it.
Yes. These two statements line up. You literally described how you were not paying attention and how it’s your fault you hit it.
If you can’t avoid stationary objects (or moving objects) while driving then you should, at the very least, hold yourself responsible. You might also consider not driving, because this time it was a clothing rack, but next time it could be an animal or human. YTA.
