AITA for leaving the plane before the lady in row 1 did?

I came home last night on a flight. There was a woman in row 1, and I was in row 4. I’d just come off a really lovely cruise, but for some reason, both my legs became horribly hard, swollen, and painful. I’m disabled, and had already requested a wheelchair on the way to my gate and from it when we landed, but I was in WAY more pain than normal.

The plane landed, and the lady in row 1 got up and headed past me towards the back of the plane. All I saw was her making her way backwards. I got up after that and got in the aisle right after that. The airplane seat was making my pain worse, and even though I requested a wheelchair, it doesn’t always mean you’ll get one before they run out, so I had to book it.

Turns out for some reason, the other lady’s luggage was halfway down the plane, which I didn’t know when I got in the aisle. She was extremely offended, got back in line only 2 people behind me, and started loudly talking about "how incredibly rude SOME PEOPLE are" with a lady to her left, who agreed and just talked shit about me the entire time.

I finally had it and turned around and said "I’m trying to get off the plane because I’m in severe pain and really need a wheelchair", but that didn’t stop the passive-aggressive shit.

Those two found each other at baggage claim and kept it up, probably because they knew I was within earshot.

Was I really that much of an asshole, or did I just manage to piss off a really bitchy lady?

  1. nah you’re not the asshole. you were in pain, you needed a wheelchair, and you moved when she cleared your row. she didn’t communicate anything. her luggage situation isn’t your problem to read minds about.

    **(NTA)**

  2. honestly the part that gets me is she kept going at baggage claim. like okay, u made your point on the plane.. but you found a buddy and kept the show running?? that’s not someone who felt wronged. that’s someone who wanted an audience. .you explained yourself. that’s more than most ppl would’ve done. let it go, you’re good

  3. I’m all for the queue, but if someone is fucking around or lagging when it should be their turn, on behalf of everyone behind me I’ll be deboarding now, thank you much

  4. NTA. That’s like sayiing someone in line at the grocery store should be upset with you, because they left the line to go get a gallon of milk they forgot they needed.

The second she went backwards beyond your position, you became in front of her in line.

  5. NTA – if her luggage was in a bin halfway down, SHE would be incredibly rude holding up the rows who were ready, to wait for her. SHE would have made deplaning slower, not you.

  6. She is the asshole for heading down back down the aisle to get her bag.

If your bag is behind you more than a row or two, you wait until everyone clears before you go back down the aisle

  7. Let me get this right, she gets out of her seat, goes back down the plane for her carry on, and had a bitch and moan because other people then got out of their seats in front of her?

Had this woman never travelled on a plane before? Did she take expect the rest of the plane to patiently sit and wait for her to leave the plane first?

    NTA.

    1. Judging by previous Reddit posts…yes. Apparently you’re supposed to always let the people in the rows get off the plane first, no matter how slow or unprepared they are, and no matter what urgency you’re experiencing or how quickly you can get off the plane and out of their way.

    2. I had this happen once because I volunteered to sit in the exit row since the person sitting there wasn’t comfortable “assisting in an emergency,” but my original seat was further back and I’d already stowed my bag. I had to wait for everyone else to get off the plane to go get my bag, which really sucked and it took absolutely forever to get off, but I didn’t whine about it because I know how airplanes work.

  8. NTA, I think the unwritten rule is that if you have to go backward for some reason, you lose your spot and people are not required to keep the aisle clear until you get back to the front.

  9. NTA

Doesn’t matter whether you needed a wheelchair or not, anyone who deliberately moves towards the back of the plane while you’re waiting to disembark doesn’t get to complain about not being able to move back up to the front.
    She’s her own problem.

    1. I got sent to the ER today for just that, and I’m okay. No clots. Just a lot of edema and got told that I need to be off my feet for at least the next few days.
