The other day in my 4th period elective "creative writing class" my teaher gave us a free write day and let us sit around the room and talk as long as our phones were turned in. (we all turned ours in) and me and my 4 other friends began playing DND which the teacher (we’ll call her Mrs. H) always allowed and even let us do it instead of writing. So about 20 minutes into class she walks over to us and starts writing something on a post it note, and when i turn around i can see its all of our names for some reason. And i started STRESSING cuz if i got in trouble id be in hella trouble so me and my friends stopped dnd and started writing. About 15 minutes later Mrs. H yells," hey olly would you like me to call" and says my mom and dads name out infront of the whole class because she was YELLING it. I askd what we did and she said we werent working ( which was baloney cuz there were 3 girls infrotn of her on snapchat on their phones but she was fine with them) and i told her to call my mom since my dad was deployed and she goes, " No. Im going to call your father instead sweetie, you’ll also get a referral and a classroom incident and emails home". So now im stressing because all of this over dnd made zero sense so I’m like panicking when one of my friends yells, "this is bullshit," and Mrs. H looks at me and goes "Olly whatd u just say? I totallly agree! Say it again" and i tell her i didnt say it, and my friend confessed that he said that, and didnt speak to us for the rest of class, even whe nwe were speaking to her. Were we in the wrong?
YTA. Usually free write class means you’re allowed to freely work on whatever writing you want I’d assume? It doesn’t just mean you can do whatever you want point blank.
If she has allowed you to play DnD before though, that is weird. But also she doesn’t have to allow it every time. It’s her classroom. She also should have taken the other girls phones if that part is true.
she has let us do dnd before prior, and she said we could do whatever as long as we were writing, which i was
YTA – you’re confusing “free time” with “free writing time.” I’m sure you’re allowed during free time. We were. But not during free writing time.
I specificaly said that she allowed us to do this prior, and free write is the same for this when she allowed us to do it
NTA is she lets you do it on class normally. Ask her what is and isn’t allowed in class
NTA. If we’re talking dnd like the tabletop game, that IS free writing.
Genuinely curious as someone who hasn’t played it but knows a bit about it, can you explain how?
It’s often referred to as “collaborative story-telling” because the Dungeon Master (person who keeps track of combat and other dice rolling opportunities) is nominally in charge, but the party members make decisions, too. So even though there is a general structure, the choices that each player makes within their team directs the actual story.
source: am old, and played D&D as a teen and young adult, and now my kid and their friends (all late twenties) have a weekly role-playing game night (sometimes D&D, sometimes other kinds).
(Thank you) Adding to this, players usually come up with character backgrounds as well, which I believe also counts as writing.
NTA. If you were writing while playing you were writing. If you were doing something she had allowed you to do in the past then you were doing something you had legitimate to believe was accepted in her class. Seems like she was just looking for a reason to get you in trouble.
INFO: You said everyone turned in their phones. So how were those girls on Snapchat on their phones? Did you get your phones back at some point and you didn’t mention it?
>as long as our phones were turned in. (we all turned ours in)
…
>which was baloney cuz there were 3 girls infrotn of her on snapchat on their phones
The teacher gave them permission ig, cuz she said wed get a referral if they werent up
I don’t understand what you’re saying here.
