My mom bought me a used bed frame from facebook marketplace and it was kind of dirty with specks and hair in the corners of it.
I don’t feel comfortable sleeping in it and I was even scared it had bedbugs. it came with a mattress as well.
There was a yellow stain on the mattress bedding and she only allowed me to replace the mattress. The box spring for the bed frame is torn up as well.
I asked her if I could replace the bed frame and she said that I’m ungrateful and that I never know the value of things.
AITA for wanting to buy a new bed frame rather than use the one she got off of facebook marketplace?
Edit: By the way, I had offered to buy the bed frame/mattress before she ever got it, and she told me to not waste my money.
Also, I forgot to mention that she lied to me that it was new and never used.
She also bought a bookcase that was broken from the bottom.
Clean the bed frame and put a mattress protector on the box spring.
Bed frames are generally metal and thus are cleanable. There are mattress protectors that you can put on the box frame to seal stuff and make it neater.
The bookshelf sucks though – caveat emptor – Latin for “Let the buyer beware.” Your mother is obviously not all that great at sussing out deals. I have so many friends in the antique/resale business and you just need to wait for the right piece at the right price. There are thrift shops, junk shops, vintage shops, consignment shops, auctions…
Rule of thumb is that wood or metal or glass or stone is safe from bugs – I mean, if it’s dusty you wipe it down outside before bringing it inside. Things like mattresses or sofas or upholstered chairs can carry insects (fleas, bedbugs, etc) and you need to know what to look for and if you don’t, you give those items a pass.
Thank you for your response.
Do you think it’s good to just replace the box spring and clean the bed frame then?.. I think she might let me do that.
I kind of got scared because a lot of people on reddit were saying that used bed frames have bed bugs and that it’s bad to buy one.
Bed frames are usually metal and entirely cleanable. Like I said, I usually clean them before they come into the house, because you have better light and if you do see anything, you can deal with it outside.
Bed bugs travel in soft goods – like mattresses and clothing and rugs. So, a metal frame, wiped down, should be fine. Any household cleaner should do the trick – even dish soap in water and a scrub brush and rag if you don’t want to get fancy.
As the box spring sounds a bit played, if you can afford getting it replaced, sure. I mean, it’s already in your house, so a mattress protector/pad would work, too.
NYC has a terrible issue with bedbugs, in other places, they might not be an issue per se. You would be able to determine better.
An upholstered bed frame might hide bed bugs. I assume a wood or metal frame could be sprayed and cleaned to be usable, but you also have the right to buy furniture you actually like as soon as possible. Resell the frame and give what you get (if anything) back to your mom. Thank her for helping you out until you could buy a style you really liked/could afford.
Google “bedbugs” to find out how to identify and get rid of them.
Well I did ask the bedbug subreddit if the specks and stuff I found in the bed frame were bed bug signs and they said no.
But I’ll ask my dad if he can buy the bed frame for me online and I can give him the money just in case, since my mother will absolutely not let me replace it. 🫠
NTAH. Sounds like your mom was trying be cheap. I’d go ahead and buy a new headboard.
NTA and NEVER allow used bedding in your place until it is fully checked out. I made the mistake of buying an antique bedframe without expert guidance and wound up with bedbugs.
I’m not really sure what to do since it is entirely wood so maybe it’s not hiding any bed bugs? But if it is the damage is most likely done since she already put it in my room 😓 Hopefully there is none
I mean it’s your money. Slight YTA for not stopping mom buying the second hand one first.
Personally if clean the bed and replace the mattress. Unless the frame is fabric can be easily cleaned and disinfected.
Well, I did tell her not to buy more used furniture since she bought a vanity which was also very dirty…
And I suggested I could buy the bed frame and mattress, but she said not to waste my money and that my dad would eventually buy it. (which I assumed was new)
If I found out that she was going to buy it, I would have definitely told her no, since I don’t like when she wastes her money
Just clean the frame. Replace the box spring if you are uncomfortable. The realty is that if it’s wood, it’s probably higher quality than you could buy new. I am at the point where I refuse to buy a bed frame new. I have bought the last two from marketplace and looking for a third but the kid is very style picky and hasn’t found what she wants yet.
