The story is: a guy I am sort of friends with was asking people for helping with testing a new Minecraft server he had created saying that people who had would get a thank you gift when the proper server opened. I offered to help and he informed me that the world I would be playing on would be a test world and would eventually be reset once most things were tested. I understood and agreed to this. I played it for around 20h, tested a bunch of things and everything was fine.
The world eventually got reset as planned and the new world was made. Now I was not told this was going to be a test world. I was told we had ONE test world and then that would be that. So, i decided to go all out on this one by making a proper base, multiple farms and a few other things. A couple of my friends joined and started making bases and things as well.
Eventually, I decided to get everything needed to go to the end and so I told the owner that I’d be going there and he asked me to test a couple things so we could get the testing phase wrapped up. Now I was confused, I asked what he meant since he said the other world was meant to be the test world. Turns out this one was also a test world and he had just decided to not tell me before I put around 65h of playtime into it.
I checked the few things in the end and confirmed they were fine and he reset the world and officially opened the proper world. Now not only did I waste 65h, I didn’t even get the thank you gift he promised would be apart of helping. When I confronted him about this he blamed me and said it was quote “my fault for not having experience with alpha testing servers previously”.
Am I at fault for being pissed at him?
YTA
I feel like its semi-common knowledge that Minecraft servers can take a few resets to finalize. I say semi because it sounds like your “sort of” friend is right, you dont have much knowledge of testing. To be pissed you put 65h of gameplay into a test without confirming if its a test or final world is kinda on you, he would have announced it was a live server.
ESH I think, he should have communicated knowing you had no knowledge of being a tester. And you for not asking more questions as someone who’s not a regular alpha tester. Seriously, you put 65 hours in without noticing there was no thank you gift yet before contacting him?
I’ve realised that he must’ve added the thank you gift bit more recently since the message he sent has been edited. Also yeah I admit I probably should’ve checked and I will take responsibility for that part but he refuses to admit any fault whatsoever. He keeps repeating that it’s my fault for not having previous experience with testing servers. He would have a decent point if he hadn’t said it he needed help on a WORLD not WORLDs
Its not multiple worlds though, its one world, different testing phases. Your confusion comes from not knowing there would be multiple testing phases, but if the server was in “alpha” then yeah there would be multiple resets.
Hes semi-right as you don’t have experience testing but knowing that he should have communicated better since he knew you didn’t know how it worked. Thats on him for not having better communication with his test players.
No but you see it WAS multiple worlds. The first world was reset and a backup was kept but he then created a second world with a completely different seed
You’re frustrated, and that’s understandable. Clear communication is crucial in any relationship, yet you also need to ask questions when unsure. Own your part in this mess.
YTA – its not a waste if you had fun.
NTA!
I think you have a right to be pissed for the simple fact he failed to give you the thank you gift he promised AND seems to have dismissed you when you brought it up!
I also think it was misleading of him to not state clearly that the second world was a test world. THAT was his obligation to ALL this volunteer testers. He is the one setting this up; he doesn’t get to blame his volunteers for not knowing information he never clearly communicated.
It doesn’t matter whether its common knowledge that test worlds might have to be reset multiple times. At SOME POINT, the world has to become permanent. It is the developer’s responsibility to have communicated clearly that each iteration of the world would be a ‘test world’ until he announced/made clear that it was not a test world. It makes no sense that he went out of his way to be clear about the terms for the first world and phrase it as if THAT was the only test world.
I do think it would have been wise of you to confirm with him that the second world was a permanent world. But this ‘friend’ had far more responsibility for communicating this than you had for confirming it.
