WIBTA for asking my roommate to stop using the blender at night?

Hi all,

I’m in a share house with two other girls (unknown ages but I’m assuming 19-21 like myself), we’re all students, none of us really talk to one another.

The roommate who shares my wall is often quite loud (playing music, talking on the phone) well into the night. While I find this annoying due to the paper-thin walls, she does so in her own room and is allowed to do so, obviously.

Recently she’s started making smoothies 3x a day with the loudest blender I’ve ever heard in my life. They take 10 minutes to make. Because she sleeps quite late she makes her 3rd smoothie at night, between 10-11pm. I know this is not very late, especially by student standards but it is SO LOUD that I get ear pain and loss of hearing in the ear closest to the kitchen. Yet to see if the current stint of dulled hearing subsides.

If she was watching TV or talking that would be fine, of course, but the blender is just so obnoxiously loud there’s no way to block it out.

WIBTA if I asked her to stop making them after 10pm?

  1. NTA. A blender is not normal nighttime noise, especially one loud enough to hurt your ears. Asking her to avoid using it after 10pm is a totally reasonable quiet-hours request. She can prep earlier, or use a shaker bottle if it’s that urgent. This is basic shared housing courtesy.

  2. NTA It is absolutely reasonable to ask. She may or may not agree, though. I am not sure if there are any house rules about quiet time, but if not, maybe consider investing in some ear plugs.

    1. I think ear plugs are reasonable if the blender makes that much noise. But warning from the roommate and appropriate time of day is also reasonable!

  3. i think the bigger issue here is that you’re getting ear pain and loss of hearing from a blender? that’s not normal, you should get that checked out. of course it’s fair to ask her and you shouldn’t be experiencing that, but as you said 10/11 is not exactly late by student standards (i assumed you meant like 2/3am when i first clicked) and i’d be kind of annoyed if someone told me i couldn’t prep food at that time, so it’s worth bearing in mind. but the blender seems like the problem & i think you’re within ur right to tell her that it’s so loud you’re experiencing a loss of hearing. but surely if you’re actually experiencing loss of hearing from it, it’s a problem no matter what time it is?

    TLDR NAH

  4. So do you get ‘ear pain and loss of hearing’ from her morning smoothies or just the late night ones?
